Bowmore Round Church
The unusual round church - the only complete circular church in Scotland - stands at the top of the Main Street in the village of Bowmore on Islay. Dating from 1767-68, the church is actually Kilarrow Parish Church, the parish predating the planned village of Bowmore. It was built by Daniel Campbell of Shawfield at a cost of £1000 - a very substantial amount at that time.
There is a main central wooden pillar supporting a king-post roof truss, with eight major beams radiating from it. A U-shaped gallery was added in 1830, creating a second storey and greatly increasing the seating.
