Jamaica Inn Bolventor
Jamaica Inn Bolventor
Grade II Listed late 18th century public house extended in the 18th and 19th centuries. The inn’s website says it was built as a coaching inn in 1750. When built it was the ‘New Inn’. The name was changed around 1778 and is thought to be from the local Trelawney family (who owned the land) and had two members of the family as Governors of Jamaica. In 1778 the Inn was extended to include a coach house, stables and a tack room creating the main part of the building as it is today. First owners recorded (with 99 year lease) are Admiral William Langdon and John Broad, innkeeper. John Broad took over tenancy followed on his death in 1803 by his widow Elizabeth until 1828. The Rodd family purchased it in 1828 and sold it on in 1846 when tenants of the inn were John Langstone and Thomas Dunn followed by William Medland and John Colwill in 1858. 1872 was William Mason followed in quick succession by Sergeant Courtney Doidge and Mr. and Mrs. Hawkes. It was 1880 when it became ‘The Jamaica Inn Temperance Hotel’ under Mary Hawkes tenancy. Bert Horrell took over as Tenant Landlord in 1923. In November 1930 Daphne Du Maurier and Foy Quiller-Couch stayed at the hotel but on leaving were forced back to shelter in the pub by a thunderstorm. However it was local Vicar of Altarnun who actually entertained them with smuggling stories a year later on a second visit. The novel ‘Jamaica Inn’ was published in 1936. Stanley Thomas of Plymouth bought the inn for £5,000 in 1945 and turned it into a club. In 1950 a full licence was obtained against local opposition. The inn was owned between 1964 and 1973 by the novelist Alistair MacLean who transformed it inside and out. It was sold again in 2014 for around £2m.
