As part of the major redevelopment of the St Peter's Square area, the Grade II* listed Cenotaph has been dismantled and will be relocated from its current island site between the St Peter's Square Metrolink platform and Mosley Street to a new spot opposite the Cooper Street entrance of the Town Hall.
The cenotaph has been put into storage for cleaning and restoration work to be carried out before it is reinstated in its new location in time for the annual Remembrance Sunday service in the autumn.
St Peter's Cross SJ8397 : St Peter's Cross, which marks the original location of St Peter's Church, is covered in scaffolding and will be restored and reassembled in its current location following the work.
The inscribed panel reads:
O LORD GOD OF OUR
FATHERS KEEP THIS
FOR EVER IN THE
IMAGINATION OF THE
THOUGHTS OF THE
HEART OF THY PEOPLE
THE CENOTAPH IS BEING
RELOCATED TO A NEW HOME
ADJACENT TO THE TOWN HALL
TO BE COMPLETED IN EARLY AUTUMN 2014
In the background is the recently reopened Central Library.
SJ8397 : Mills across the water Building on the right is a modern pastiche. I looked at this early in 2008 and realised it for what it was quite quickly. There is an excellent complex of converted mills in this corner. Just as important as Ancoats.
