St Albans Cathedral: south transept and Chapter House
The south transept is part of the original 11th century Norman abbey church, but the adjacent Chapter House (right) was only opened in 1982.
St Albans cathedral
An Anglican cathedral, on a site that dates back to the 3rd century CE when Saint Alban was martyred here. A church and later a Benedictine Abbey were erected on the site. Most of the present building dates from the 11th-14th centuries, but the abbey church only became a cathedral in 1877. Alban's shrine still forms the centrepiece of the cathedral.
