TQ0376 : Poyle: Beau Nash's Water Pump

taken 11 years ago, near to Poyle, Slough, England

Poyle: Beau Nash's Water Pump
Poyle: Beau Nash's Water Pump
Standing incongruously today amidst the hotels, offices and road signs in Poyle next to Heathrow, the water pump was, according to the plate on it, erected on the instructions of Beau Nash of Bath in 1754. The road is Bath Road and at one time would have been the arterial route to it from London. The English Heritage description is slightly disparaging about the pump describing it thus:-

"Late C19 in appearance; enormous cast-iron pump. About 8 ft high and listing somewhat, large handle. Recent inscription claims "This pump was erected by Beau Nash of Bath in 1754".

Nonetheless the pump merits Grade II Listing status.

For views of the description plates please see Roger's TQ0376 : Poyle Pump - inscription on the pump and TQ0376 : Poyle Pump - 1992 inscription near the pump, the latter implying that the pump was erected in 1827.
