Royal for Sale
A for sale notice has gone up on the side of the Theatre Royal, Hyde. Whilst that might seem like bad news for theatre lovers it isn't so as any interested party need to understand that the theatre is a Grade 2 listed building. As such, listed building consent must be applied for in order to make any changes to the building which might affect its special interest. The Theatre Royal Trust have drawn up an options appraisal which should allow the building to be used as cinema/theatre in the future.
Hyde Theatre Royal (Onward)
The theatre opened on 3rd November 1902. A cinema was added in 1911. In 1972 live entertainment ceased at the Theatre Royal Hyde and a part of the stage and two dressing rooms were used to accommodate a second cinema. In 1992 the Theatre Royal cinemas closed completely The reason was fraud beyond the knowledge of the London owners and the theatre manager, which led to closure as a liability. In 2000 the Theatre Royal was given Grade II listed Link status and a Building Preservation Trust formed to save it. It was registered in 2001 with Companies House, as Theatre Royal Onward. using the wording of the Hyde Coat-of-Arms. In 2002 Theatre Royal Onward became a registered incorporate charity and, in the Theatre Royal's centenary year, a new era of its history began. The theatre was owned by a property speculator but the Trust Archive Link had plans to purchase the building and revitalise it as a venue for theatrical productions, weddings, conferences, dance shows, dinner dances, live music, commercial business launches, art exhibitions and other commercial and community events. Their bid to purchase eventually failed and the building was bought by Masjid at Tawheed Link in 2018 and has now opened as an Islamic Resource Centre.
