Castle Howard, west elevation
Castle Howard was built between 1699 and 1712 for the 3rd Earl of Carlisle, to a design by Sir John Vanbrugh and has been the home of part of the Howard family for more than 300 years.
On the night of November 9th, 1940, a disastrous fire which started in the southeast wing, spread to the Great Hall, destroying many rooms and the central dome which was eventually rebuilt in 1962.
