NT3975 : Transformer house at Cockenzie
taken 12 years ago, near to Cockenzie and Port Seton, East Lothian, Scotland
This is one of the series of large coal-fired power stations built around the UK in the 1950s and 60s.
The location was chosen to be close to the Lothian coalfield and the shoreline site ensured an adequate supply of cooling water. The plant was rated at 1200MW, consisting of 4x300MW turbine generating units. Electricity generation commenced in 1968, although in recent years it was primarily in use as a peak-demand top-up station, for which purpose it had been modified for quick start-up.
The power station closed in March 2013 and by June 2013 demolition work was already underway. A gas-fired replacement generating station was proposed for the site but has not been proceeded with.
