Chipping Steam Fair, Green Goddess
RXP 897, the preserved 1956 Bedford Green Goddess from the Commercial Vehicle Museum* at Leyland, takes part in the commercial vehicle parade on the Green Lane Showground as part of the 2013 Chipping Steam Fair.

The Green Goddess is a colloquial name given to the Bedford RLHZ Self Propelled Pump, a fire engine used originally by the Auxiliary Fire Service (AFS), and latterly by the British Armed Forces. These green-painted vehicles were built between 1953 and 1956 for the Auxiliary Fire Service. The design was based on a Bedford RL series British military truck.

After 1968, when the AFS was disbanded, the vehicles were put into storage, but occasionally used by the Armed Forces to provide fire cover in a number of fire strikes, notably in 1977 and 2002. They were also deployed to pump water in floods and droughts.

Chipping Steam Fair (2013)

The first Chipping Steam Fair was held in 1998 to support efforts to raise funds for a new Village Hall. What was originally seen as a one-off event has now become an annual event interrupted only in 2001, when that year’s event had to be cancelled because of the outbreaks of Foot and Mouth which had plagued so much of the countryside during the year.

The 2013 event was held over the Bank Holiday Weekend, 25th - 27th May, at the Green Lane Showground. As well an excellent array of steam engines and classic vehicles of all varieties, a host of other attractions were on display including helicopter rides, classic cars, steam demonstrations, vintage tractors, military vehicles and a replica Spitfire as well as other events such as the dog agility trials.
