SJ9949 : Consall Plateway

taken 12 years ago, near to Consall, Staffordshire, England

Consall Plateway
Consall Plateway
Part of the line of the former Consall Plateway is now part of a circular walk through Chase Wood. At this point, it crosses a gully on an embankment and several of the stone sleepers can still be seen where foot traffic has worn through the turf.
Also known as the North Stafford Railway, the plateway was built between 1815 and 1819 to deliver limestone from the canal at Consallforge to wharves along the line down to Weston Coyney. It was not a great success and suffered financial difficulties. The southern sections were abandoned early on and the remainder fell into disuse some time after 1840.
