NS4378 : Cementstone nodules in the Spouts Burn

taken 14 years ago, 3 km from Bonhill, West Dunbartonshire, Scotland

Cementstone nodules in the Spouts Burn
Cementstone nodules in the Spouts Burn
For context, the part of the burn in which these nodules were found is shown in NS4378 : The Spouts Burn. The nodules eroded out of an adjacent slope: NS4378 : The Spouts Burn.

The stone at the centre of the present image has a distinctive pattern of surface cracks, such as is often seen in such nodules throughout the area (compare NS4178 : Cementstone nodule in Auchenreoch Glen). In fact, most of the stones in this image are likewise cementstone nodules. They are composed of an impure form of limestone, precipitated out in shallow seas and lagoons during extended periods of drought in the Carboniferous period.
