SH8075 : Bench with outcrop

taken 14 years ago, near to Llansanffraid Glan Conwy, Conwy, Wales

Bench with outcrop
In Glan Conwy rock is seldom far from the surface. Here a rather degraded, scree-like outcrop shows that it is often used as an adventure playground.

The eastern side of the Conwy Valley comprises a thick series of slatey mudstones of Silurian age, separated by a significant fault along the valley from older, Ordovician rocks to the west. The rock here is attributed to the Nantglyn Flags, an unfortunate name as the dominant feature here is an intense cleavage of the rocks. Flags are rocks which tend to split along their original sedimentary layering.
