taken 37 years ago, near to Wicklow, Co Wicklow, Ireland

Ammonia train, Wicklow
Ammonia train, Wicklow
Irish Fertiliser Industries Limited (a state-owned company incorporated in the Republic of Ireland) operated two factories. One at Belfast harbour and one at Shelton Abbey near Arklow. Both used ammonia produced at Marino Point near Cork. The liquid gas was conveyed to Belfast by ship. Shelton was served by rail. The morning empty tank train from Shelton to Marino had just arrived at Wicklow where it would cross the 09.35 Dublin Connolly – Rosslare Harbour. Both factories closed, amid much controversy and media comment, in 2002. See also T3094 : Wicklow station.
