Ackworth School
A branch of The London Foundling Hospital was founded in 1741 at Ackworth when infant foundlings were sent up from London to be brought up in the local cottages mainly on Seatons farm, a decision was then made in 1746 to build a Hospital at Ackworth and 58 acres of land was bought from Farmer Smeaton but it was another 11 years before building was begun in 1757 and opened in 1759 the Hospital only lasted 12 years before it was closed down in 1771 the building then stood empty for 6 years before a Quaker physician John Fothergill from London bought the buildings to set up a school which was opened in 1779.
