Nottingham - NG11 (Wilford)
This somewhat deceptive picture suggests nothing more than an overgrown footpath following the route of a former railway line. Although these are the remains of a section of the former Great Central Railway route between Sheffield, Annesley and Nottingham (Victoria Station) - lying between one of Emmanuel School's playing field boundaries and Vernon Ave - it is however, situated on a fairly inaccessible 50ft (15m) high embankment. Presumably vast amounts of coal from the Annesley area pits were transported as far south as London via Nottingham, Loughborough Central, Leicester Central, Lutterworth, Rugby and Woodford Halse, although GCR passenger trains also linked these cities until the Beeching rationalisation programme of the late 60s.
