A890 road closure, January 2012
This is the start of the A890 at its junction with the A87 in Auchtertyre. The road was blocked a few miles to the north of here by a rockfall on 22nd December 2011, and it is likely to remain closed for at least another month. There are not many roads here, so the diversion route for what is an 18-mile journey from this junction to Lochcarron using the A890 becomes a detour of some 140 miles. Enterprising locals have brought the Glenelg to Skye ferry out of its winter rest time, and are operating it between Strome Ferry and North Strome. Strome Ferry is famous for its 'Strome Ferry (no ferry)' road sign (see
NG8634 : The (In)famous Roadsign). This ferry route was closed in the 1970s.
