The Martyrs' Monument
The Martyrs' Memorial stands at the west end of the Scores, on a cliff overlooking the sea. It stands over ten metres in height and is often seen on the skyline in pictures and broadcasts from the Royal and Ancients golf course.
The obelisk dates from 1842-3 and was erected in honour of Protestant martyrs of the Reformation era. The inscription (NO5017 : Inscription on the Martyrs' Monument) reads:
In memory of the martyrs
Patrick Hamilton, Henry Forrest, George Wishart and Walter Mile
who in support of the Protestant faith suffered death by fire at St Andrews
between the years MDXXVIII and MDLVIII
-- -- ----------- shall be in everlasting
remembrance
(I couldn’t make out the word(s) at the start of the penultimate line)
