The River Churnet and Caldon Canal use the same channel here. The River flows into the River Dove south of Rocester.

This is the line from near Coalpit Wood, looking towards Cheddleton.

The North Staffordshire Railway was opened in 1849 from North Rode, near Macclesfield, to Uttoxeter in the south, a distance of 27¾ miles. This included filling in and building along the short-lived Uttoxeter Canal. The line was closed to passengers in 1965 and freight in 1988.

The Churnet Valley Railway Company has been running steam trains between Kingsley and Froghall, Cheddleton and Leekbrook Junction, since 2001. (Services around Cheddleton and Consall were earlier). Since late 2010, an alliance with the new Moorland and City Railway Company has resulted in monthly steam weekends up to Cauldon Low.
