Princes Street Gardens, Fountain
The Ross Fountain was an exhibit at the Great Exhibition of 1862 where it was purchased by gunmaker Daniel Ross who subsequently gifted it to the city of Edinburgh. The cast-iron structure was installed in West Princes Street Gardens in 1872. It was extensively restored during 2017-18 and re-inaugurated on 8 July 2018. The fountain is now painted in turquoise, brown and gold.

Sculpted by artist Jean-Baptiste Jules Klagmann and produced at the world-famous iron foundry of Antoine Durenne in Sommevoire, France, the cast-iron fountain is a magnificent example of 19th century cast-iron work, in the neoclassical style commonly known as Beaux Arts. The first tier contains eight mermaid statues holding urns, and four lions’ faces as spouts. On the second tier, there are four female figures representing science, arts, poetry and industry. The second tier water basins are held up by mermaid children. At the top of the fountain, the final figure holds a cornucopia.

Along with Waverley Station, the Princes Street Gardens are located in the steep, narrow valley between the medieval Old Town and the 18th century New Town.

This valley was formerly filled by a freshwater loch called the Nor Loch which became badly polluted by sewage and household waste as the Old Town became more crowded during the Middle Ages. During the construction of the New Town, the Nor Loch was drained and the area was converted into private gardens for Princes Street residents until the city purchased them and opened them to the public in 1876 with the name Princes Street Gardens.
