Crossways Lane and the M25
Crossways Lane was originally a lane connecting Gatton Bottom with Blackhorse Lane/High Road/Babylon Lane, meeting the last three at The Crossways. When the stretch of the M25 between the present junctions 6 and 8 was built in the mid 1970s, opening in 1976, the lane was diverted around 100m westwards each side of the motorway before being crossed by the motorway (at that stage just the slip roads up to junction 8, the main carriageway not being built until the opening of the stretch from junction 8 to 10 in 1985). The reason for the diversion was presumably to create sufficient clearance under the motorway, which would have been difficult on the original line due to the gradient of Crossways Lane. At the same time, Crossways Lane was closed to through traffic and instead became a bridleway.
When this stretch of the M25 was later widened to 8 lanes in each direction, the slip roads for junction 8 were extended, meaning that Crossways Lane now goes under 12 lanes traffic lanes at this bridge.
