Shipman Head is technically a tidal island, cut off from Bryher at high tide but not at low tide. However even at low tide to get to Shipman Head would be difficult!

Shipman Head is separated from the rest of Bryher by a virtually impassable chasm at sea level (the Gulf).

The sound was a supply route and also the safest anchorage in the Isles of Scilly. Cromwell built this castle in 1651 and the royalists surrendered shortly after. Shipman Head. Bryher is to the left, this is only one of the cannon in position
