This used to be the most prestigious street, but the focus of the town has shifted to the north, and you can see it is past its best. The old baths and St Peter's Church are visible, as intended when the streets were laid out.

The re-built Ashton Canal Warehouse is home to the Portland Basin Museum, Ashton under Lyne. Portland Basin is at the junction of the Ashton and Peak Forest Canals.

On the banks of the Ashton canal, you can see this sad reminder of Lancashire’s proud industrial past. Good times for the rich owners but not a paradise for the men, women and children who spent their short lives making Britain great.

That's the name of the narrowboat moored just past the footbridge over the Ashton Canal.
