Catchment area of Marl Sike
Marl Sike is a minor stream draining part of Dryburn Moor and is in fact a tributary of Dry Burn.
Cross Fell can be seen in the far distance at the centre of the image.

2 Chimneys on Flow Moss south of Allendale

Viewed from the Carriers' Way, the distant chimney is both taller and thinner than the one in the foreground. The remains of two flues from the former lead smelting mill near Allendale run to these chimneys.

The faint track over the moor leads to the two chimneys (just visible to the right - one stubby, one slender) at the top of a long inclined flue leading up from the old lead smelting works in Allendale.

The 1840 Allen Smelt Mill flue chimney and a much smaller construction, a small cairn, to the right. The seat just out of shot to the right provides a superb view across the area as far as the Tyneside conurbation.

Flow Moss
Flow Moss is an area of marshy, waterlogged land to the west of the Allen Smelt Mill chimneys. The mosses were killed by pollution from lead mining activity but this area marks the first evidence of human activity in the Allendale valley.... (more)
