The Coalite chemical plant is now closed and is currently being demolished. It used to produce smokeless fuels and many chemicals which were a by-product of the process.

The river flowed right through the former Coalite works which occupied an extensive area of the valley floor. Having only recently moved to the area I have never seen the full scale of the industrial operations here.

Bolsover Castle is seen on the hill ahead, and the River Doe Lea flows in the valley between.

Direction is a guess. A nice view of the plant spreading smoke over the countryside. Shortly afterwards the host of short chimneys were replaced with one or two big tall ones to spread it from a greater height!

A pair of class 20 locos haul a short train away past the Coalite works on a dull April evening. This location like so many no longer sends out any coal by rail the lines are now out of use.
