Granite outcrop
The low crags of Maol an t-Sidhein comprise a series of offshoots from the Ross of Mull Granite which intrude the Moine Schist. The poor soils and lack of drainage make for a rather dull, boggy landscape.

Farm Building Near Track

We walked past this farm building on the twisting track while walking to and from Beinn a'Chaol-airigh. This building will belong to the organic farm called Ardanalish Farm.

Ruined croft houses
An indication of the importance of very marginal land is given by these ruined croft houses at Knocknafenaig, which shelter behind a low, craggy hill to the west. The bigger house seems to be relatively modern, since it has mortar in the stone walls.

Sheepfolds

These interlinked pens for managing sheep are in excellent repair; a discreet plaque on the outer wall records that they were restored in 1984 by Dochie MacCormick and John Cameron.
