This bridleway between Surrender Bridge and Reeth is the route of Alfred Wainwright's Coast to Coast Walk. Swaledale and its patchwork of fields can be seen in the background.

The relatively short Barney Beck, a tributary of the River Swale, begins its life as Flincher Gill, becoming in turn Hard Level Gill then Mill Gill or Old Gang Beck before gaining its final name.

Barney Beck flows in a steep-sided and wooded valley, mostly over boulder rapids, but at this point there is a limestone slab forming the bed of the stream.
