South west Coast Path on The Beacon

The South West Coast Path briefly enters this grid square passing along the clifftops above Gutterside Beach. Burgh Island can be seen in the distance.

Looking up the valley

The path runs a little way inland here through cattle pasture.

At its highest, the cliff here is about 100 metres above sea level; the camera position is about 90 above. Numerous hoverflies colonise the edge of the turf here.

Approaching The Beacon.

Not far from The Beacon. This land is all part of the National Trust owned Scobbiscombe Farm.

Also shown at Link and here, finally, the sun is out - though not for that long. The coast path is following Kingston footpath 8.

There is a 300 foot drop just to the right of the footpath.

A map attached to the signpost shows the course of the two permissive paths, although the one to the right, to Hoist Point, is not shown on OS maps. It's pouring with semi-horizontal rain.

A scene that brings to mind some critical agrarian events in "Far from the Madding Crowd". I'm alarmed equally to see them all lying down, possibly suffering from bloat, and then to see some stand up and move, clearly... (more)
