Between 41/2 and 5 stars because it could have used slightly more editing. However, reminding me of AS Byatt whom I also love, the tale of wonderful characters divides the story between the 17thC and the present. It is so difficult to do that well but here, it is seamless.
Jewish identity, cutthroat Academic competition, and powerful character relationships run parallel to London during the plague, Rabbinical difference, women’s roles, love and betrayal.
Yep...they’re all there and brilliantly done. I ready slowly and carefully to force myself to absorb all that was written.
I’ve read other books by this author. Some were good but I never knew she had this one in her. I’m such a fan now.
