Fantastic premise, lackluster execution.
I think this book needed a bit more editing as it was all over the place - the prose was either so flowery that I couldn't help but cringe only to then repeat the same internal conflict on every other page with no development.
I really liked the idea of different Holidays and forming alliances but the parents (especially Coal's and Kris's dad) pulling all the strings and them being manipulated all the time felt so YA...which then made the constant reminders of Coal that he "could still taste Hex" feel very weird. Also I never want to see the phrase "he deserves something real" again after Coal mentioned that about 25 times. Overall the tonality of the story was just a mess.
Still, a fun premise and some cute holiday fluff if you can ignore the politics that needed a severe fleshing-out instead of unnecessary info dumping 🤷‍♀️
(Also let's be real this will become a movie at some point because it translates way better onto the screen and I'll watch that shit on a loop)
