The illustrations are beautiful and filled with movement and emotion and the simple text works beautifully to convey everything a young Chinese American girl is feeling about a family outing. While in the car with her family one day, her mother spots a patch of watercress growing wild around a ditch at the side of the road. Served for dinner that night, her family encourages her to eat it - it is fresh and free. When her Mother talks about her life in China, and the great famine she begins to understand her family's culture and what this treasure meant to them. It is a beautiful moment when she tastes some of the watercress and finds it is delicious and a tie to a family she knew little about. Just a beautiful story....more
