Magenta Periwinkle, Cutting Class

“Oh, he did look like a deity – the perfect balance of danger and charm, he was at the same time fascinating and inaccessible, distant because of his demonstrated flawlessness, and possessing such strength of character that he was dismaying and at the same time utterly attractive in an enticing and forbidden way.”
Simona Panova, Nightmarish Sacrifice

Stacey Kade

a guy. It builds character.”

“She raised a sharp eyebrow at him. "Vlad, no offense, but look at you. If you're not a vampire, you're clearly the most anemic goth I've ever seen."... "We believed you. Because that's what friends do."
pg267 October to Vlad”
Heather Brewer, Twelfth Grade Kills

“Goth was sort of the melancholy cousin of punk that says: there's a lot of evil in this world, there's a lot of very mean spirited people and that makes me sad.”
Aurelio Voltaire Hernández

Stacey Kade
“At least I graduated," he muttered, stabbing the key in and unlocking the door.
I sucked in a breath. "I think dying was a little out of my control, thank you very much."
"If you say so". He shrugged, but I saw the corner of his mouth turn up into a faint smile.”
Stacey Kade

Nathan Squiers
“Brian came in heavy at that moment on his guitar, the rapid, high-pitched squeal ranging back and forth as his fingers flew along the frets. As the intro's tempo grew more rapid, Bekka heard Derek's subtle bass line as it worked its way in. After another few seconds Will came in, slow at first, but racing along to match the others' pace. When their combined efforts seemed unable to get any heavier, David jumped into the mix.

As the sound got nice and heavy, Bekka began to rock back-and-forth onstage. In front of her, hundreds of metal-lovers began to jump and gyrate to their music. She matched their movements for a moment, enjoying the connection that was being made, before stepping over to the keyboard that had been set up behind her. Sliding her microphone into an attached cradle, she assumed her position and got ready. Right on cue, all the others stopped playing, throwing the auditorium into an abrupt silence. Before the crowd could react, however, Bekka's fingers began to work the keys, issuing a rhythm that was much softer and slower than what had been built up. The audience's violent thrash-dance calmed at that moment and they began to sway in response.

Bekka smiled to herself.

This is what she lived for.”
Nathan Squiers, Death Metal

Stacey Kade
“I couldn't loose somebody else like that, without even the chance to say good-bye. Not again. Not her.”
Stacey Kade

“Do you have any idea who Erin was kissing?"
"Yeah, so we'll brush out teeth really, really thoroughly afterwards," I said, bumping her nose with mine gently. I wasn't going to let anyone spoil this moment.”
Stacey Kade

Edgar Allan Poe
“If you still think me mad, you will think so no longer when I describe the wise precautions I took for the concealment of the body.”
Edgar Allan Poe, The Tell-Tale Heart

Ruadhán J. McElroy
“I never saw "being different" in and of itself as the point to "being Goth" -- dressing different from most others, maybe, but the point to me was to get together with people who liked the same music and clothes, or at least very similar music and clothes, and go to clubs, go to movies, go to coffee-houses and hold poetry readings and, in general, just have some good harmless fun. Did I look like a dork? Sure, but so did everybody else in the club. We weren't "being different", at least not all of us, we just were different and the point was to stop bitching about being different and just have fun.”

Poppy Z. Brite
“Nothing gazed around at the kids in the club. They were all so beautiful. He loved their choppy hairstyles, their costume jewelry, their ragged black or multicolored clothes. He loved the way they all somehow looked like him, and he wished he could make friends with every one of them.”
Poppy Z. Brite, Lost Souls

“Darkness weaved with uncertainty all around me, yet determination slowly started to seep into my veins.”
Lilith Fury, In the darkness we share

“And you're quite sure about this video game thing?" Jay looked and sounded skeptical. "She is a princess."
Sylvie snorted. "So her personal hobbies ought to be---what? Practicing ribbon-cutting? Swanning around St. Giles unveiling makeshift plaques? The girl walks her pit bull in a Metallica T-shirt, and showed up to the Easter service at the Abbey wearing a skull necklace. Gamer princess seems entirely on brand.”
Lucy Parker, Battle Royal

“The bride's sleek dark hair was smoothed into an unusually restrained knot, but she'd stuck to her guns with the heavy black eyeliner. Her lacy black dress was a little funereal, but clearly a compromise between her own preference for Victoriana and the palace's idea of appropriate styling for a photo shoot that would make the history books. The groom was wearing a pink shirt, and his curls were fluffy.
It was like a grown-up Emily the Strange marrying Bertie Wooster.
The smiles were natural, the body language extremely affectionate, but their knuckles were white. Nerves or tension?
Sylvie studied the cover shot for a few more seconds, then scrolled down to the article. The journalist would have had a lot of the copy sitting ready to go. This had been on the rumor mill since their first joint public appearance. The union between the king's eldest granddaughter and the youngest son of a baronet, who, according to this tabloid, had inherited neither land nor brain cells from his parents.
The overgrown Goth princess and a stuttering social climber with all the poise and sophistication of a golden retriever.
Charming.”
Lucy Parker, Battle Royal

“Each layer was a clean, crisp white. Marzipan over rich Vienna cream icing, edged with sugar lace, a delicate spidery web of lines, the perfect allusion of the bobbin lace that Princess Rose liked to weave. Or at least claimed she wove as a useful anecdote. His notes stated that she gave biannual speeches as patron of the City of London Arts and Crafts Guild.
Flowers wound up the side of the cake, the blooming vine of a fairy tale.
He studied the effect with distaste.
A tap of the leftmost flower, and the petals changed color from an iridescent pink to a deep, brooding blood purple, almost black in tone. He swept his hand in front of the cake. One after another, the edges of the peony poppies bled, thee dark color leaching over the celestial pink. Still fairy tale, but with the inevitable malevolent element.
Better.
Also better suited to a dungeon or coffin than a reception table, but from the impression he got of the bride, the Tim Burton vibe was strongly in her wheelhouse.”
Lucy Parker, Battle Royal

Neda Aria
“I’m sorry but this place is promised to be the last destination for the guests who willingly want to die.”
Neda Aria, Feminomaniacs

Amina Akhtar
“Everyone dressed in their best event attire. Fashion event, not normal event. I even wore Alexander McQueen, this season. (Sarah laughed at me. “You don’t have to be so damned goth!”)”
Amina Akhtar, #FashionVictim

Neil Gaiman
“Well, it's no harder to be nice than it is to be creepy.
And it's much more fun.”
Neil Gaiman, Death: The High Cost of Living #1

“I never liked Queen. I can honestly say I hated Queen and everything that they did.”
Robert Smith

“subcultures are liable to influence extensively the everyday lives of participants in practice, and that, more often than not, this concentrated involvement will last years rather than months”
Paul Hodkinson, Goth: Identity, Style and Subculture

J. Sheridan Le Fanu

Sheridan Le Fanu, Carmilla
