Even 42 years after it was published this stands up as a useful and quite wide-ranging coverage of Viking era understanding. There is plenty of opinion and belief, even information, around about Vikings but some areas covered here are hard to find elsewhere. The chapter on Art and Artists was particularly detailed. The coverage consistently places the Vikings in their historical context, very useful in helping us to see the continuity of their culture as well as its distinctiveness.
I’m interested in Viking textiles and embroidery, and, although there is little specifically focusing on those, this has proved invaluable in furthering my interest.
