From the bestselling author of Jewel of the Nile comes the thrilling tale of a woman who feels she has no future but soon discovers the fate of nations may rest in her hands.
The beloved daughter of Jewish captives in Babylon, Keren is sold into Daniel’s household to help her family survive. She becomes Daniel’s most trusted scribe, while taking lessons and swordsmanship training alongside Daniel’s sons and their best friend, Jared.
But after a tragic accident changes the course of her life, Keren finds herself in a foreign country, charged with a mysterious task: teaching a shepherd boy how to become a lord. When she overhears whispers that hint at his true identity, she realizes she must protect him from the schemes of a bloodthirsty king.
Jared cannot forgive Keren. Still, he finds himself traveling over mountains to fetch her back to the safety of home. When he discovers the secret identity of Keren’s pupil, Jared knows he must help protect him. Love battles bitterness as they flee from the king’s agents, trying to save the boy who could one day deliver their people from captivity.

Filled with the words of the psalms and the prophets and featuring palace intrigue, this new release from Tessa Afshar was a home run for me. I loved imagining what it would be like to work alongside Daniel in Babylon. For Keren this becomes a reality despite her being a female servant. Her relationship with Jared, a friend of the household grows and is challenged in many ways throughout the story. There is palace intrigue in Babylon, Mede, and Persia. Through it all, Keren and Jared remember the wise words that Daniel shared with them about trusting God always. Loved the identity of the hidden prince and the working out of prophecy in the narrative. An encouraging word for our times, too.
Thank you to Tyndale House and Edelweiss+ for a DRC in exchange for an honest review.
A masterpiece. Perfection. I loved it. The unique story, the romance (okdkgbskallf obsessed) ,the faith content was incredible. There’s really nothing else to say.
Ps. Don’t read the blurb I beg you! I read it after reading the book and I feel it spoils too much info!!! Go read it without knowing anything about it and I promise you, you won’t be able to stop! 🤍
Okay, it’s official. I am in love with this author’s work! This is her second novel I’ve had the pleasure of reading and both times I’ve been in tears! I’ve had to stop often and reflect on passages that stood out like they were written just for me. God has used both of Afshar’s novels to speak to me in different ways. I have closed both books with a profound sense of the goodness and love of the Father. I can’t wait to read more of her work 🥹
Though I’ve read some GREAT biblical fiction in the past two months, Ms. Afshar’s historical biblical about Daniel’s family, a slave girl’s tumultuous journey in a foreign land, and God’s sovereign hand on a hidden prince is my favorite! And though I’ve read nearly all of Afshar’s previous books—and enjoyed each one—Keren’s story is my new favorite!
Not only does The Hidden Prince have everything that makes a novel worthy of best-seller status—strong characters, sweet romance, plausible danger, perfect pacing, and rewarding resolution—but each character’s spiritual growth also felt like an added devotional thought. This book is a treasure for heart and mind, full of both information and chances for transformation when the characters’ deep lessons take root in the reader’s own soul.
Cultural detail and historical insights are expertly woven into seamless fiction as Afshar’s master storytelling rises to a whole new level. Those who want to learn more about Daniel and/or Israel’s days in Babylonian exile will enjoy this book. It’s also a great read for those interested in understanding Isaiah’s and Jeremiah’s prophecies. The Author’s Note is full of wonderful information about which parts of the book are biblical Truth, historical fact, and creative fiction. It also gives helpful resources for further study on this era in Israel’s history. A must read for every biblical fiction fan!
Tessa Afshar simply never disappoints! What a beautiful story filled with adventure, romance, forgiveness, and sacrifice. Both history, and the Bible, are brought to life in the story of Keren and Jared. I was fascinated by the historical world they occupied (including the Hanging Gardens of Babylon!) and the pieces of the puzzle that Afshar weaves together in such an expert way to lead her readers to the “hidden prince.” I highly recommend this inspiring, gorgeous novel.
How can I review a book that has left me completely and utterly speechless?? That has taken my heart captive?? The Hidden Prince is everything I could ask for in a story.
- Not just one but THREE captivating ancient historical settings (including languages, location descriptions, and traditions) - Biblical texts and Christian faith woven into every chapter - Characters I wish were real so I could befriend them - A romance that goes through suffering to come out stronger and more beautiful - A strong, kind, and wise female main character - An intriguing plot that kept me turning pages - Daniel in the Bible is one of my favorite accounts and his wisdom is so rich! - I'm currently reading Isaiah in my Bible reading and this coincided PERFECTLY. IYKYK.
While reading this, I was encouraged that though our lives may take wild turns, the Lord is still in control and He has a good plan. Each day while we are alive is His to use us for His glory! Keren's journey was not at all how she envisioned, but she recognized the guiding hand of God and by the end, knew that His purpose for her life was to fill His promises and bless others. Thank You, Lord, and thank you, Tessa!
I honestly did NOT want this beautiful, very well researched, captivating story to end. I will definitely be coming back to is again <3
Side note: I feel that Keren & Sarah from Tessa Afshar's Harvest of Rubies would be great friends!
~~~~~~~~ 2023 reread: STILL a favorite!!! STILL felt all the emotional damage and redemption!!!
This was my first Afshar book and won’t be my last! I so enjoyed this story with its romance, adventure, and lessons done in such a tasteful way all against an historical setting that intrigued me with is freshness but also comforted me with a few names I recognized from the Bible.
From the onset I was drawn in by the personal touch of Keren’s voice written so well. I also loved seeing Jared’s side of things too even from a different voice style and how that pared so well. Add in the historical details and some shocking events (no spoilers here) and I couldn’t put this down!
I highly recommend this to fans of historical or biblical fiction but also to those who like romance and Christian fiction in general. You’ll find love, forgiveness, and a unique look at how God works through this story!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this gifted copy. All opinions are my own.
Audiobook (narrated by Pilar Witherspoon) I thoroughly enjoyed this romance. The setting was different for me, and although some of the parts about Cyrus were the gift of the author’s imagination, it all seemed quite plausible. Jared’s bitterness toward Keren over the accident was a stretch for me. It was so obviously not intentional on her part that I found myself wanting to slap him and say, “Grow up and get over it.” LOL! But that didn’t diminish my enjoyment of the story.
Robin’s Ratings 5🌟 = Out of this world. Amazing. Unforgettable. A personal favorite. 4🌟 = Enjoyed/loved it. Couldn’t put it down. Will recommend to others. 3🌟 = Liked it. Glad I read it. Engaging/entertaining/interesting. 2🌟 = The book was okay, but I’ve enjoyed other books so much more. 1🌟 = For whatever reason, I didn’t like it and can’t recommend it.
Firstly, wow. Secondly, WOW! What a novel! I'm still kind of in shock by another masterpiece that Ms Afshar has once again written. This was one of my most highly anticipated reads for 2022, and going into it, I was nervous that it might not meet my expectations, but I'm happy to report that it was all that I hoped for! I literally sat down and devoured this book in one sitting...
The main character, Keren, was such an interesting character and her journey filled with both sorrow and joy was such a pleasure to read. The lessons that she encountered and learnt both encouraged and challenged my own faith, and her growth was so beautiful to read. Her relationship with Jared was also so precious, and I cried and laughed alongside her through their crazy but wonderful journey. I loved Jared as well, and his character growth had me empathising and cheering for him.
And what a journey it was! Exciting, thrilling, and captivating, the plot had me on the edge of my seat and it also had me gasping out loud at the revelations and secrets that unfolded across the pages.
And now to my favourite part of the novel... Artadates . Seriously, this little guy captured my heart from the moment he walked onto the pages and made me love him all the more as the story progressed. His mischief and sense of adventure made him so lovable, and I couldn't help but root for him from the very first sarcastic comment he made. He had me rolling my eyes at his antics, whilst also breaking my heart with his vulnerability. I would absolutely LOVE to see another novel with his story!
Anyways, enough about Artadates... I was so privileged to go on this adventure with Keren. The worldbuilding in this novel was masterfully done, and I literally felt the wind on my face and the dust on my feet as I imagined the cities and palaces that Ms Afshar so brilliantly brought to life. There's just something about her writing style which I can't describe that just pulls me in so much. A truly special storyteller.
Engaging Biblical Fiction novel by the talented Tessa Afshar. The message of leaning on God was strong as Keren and Jared take unexpected paths. Bits of humor sprinkled in.
I listened via Audible. The narrator was mostly good. There were some words that the final sound was a little long.
“She’s all alone?” “I did not say that.” “Who went with her?” “The Lord, our God.”
This was insanely beautiful, I'm still in awe. The Hidden Prince touched my very soul right from the start, and now I fear I must read every single Tessa Afshar book in existence.
I originally planned to read it in three days, because I had the audiobook and the story is split into three parts, but I ended up finishing it in two because it was so gripping. I actually wanted to binge all of it yesterday and had to convince myself not to.
We have a dual PoV, one following Keren who's the main character, and the other following Jared who's her best friend turned something more.
I was LIVING for their interactions, highlighted almost every single one because they were so sweet (or so heartbreaking, depends on where you are in the story). I loved their romance, it was simply precious.
Cyrus's story was absolutely amazing too and superbly woven into Keren's storyline, and makes perfect sense. You can tell the author did a lot of research to make everything work as it does.
Daniel being included was really the icing on the cake, I loved listening to his wisdom.
The audiobook narrator was great as well, I don't have a single complaint about her performance.
Also, reading this made me love the Bible so much more, and made me want to crack it open immediately. After reading this I feel as if I have so much more context for things, it's very exciting.
I can't wait to jump into the second book, I know Jemmah's story is going to be just as amazing.
This was yet another Tessa Afshar book that I could not put down and did not want to put down because it was SO good from beginning to end!! Who needs sleep, anyways.
This story follows a young woman named Keren who becomes a scribe in Daniel's household, but terrible events force her to flee to Media where she becomes entwined with the deliverance of a young boy who might one day save her people. To help rescue him is her old friend Jared, who must learn to forgive her and in the process get their hearts back again.
I loved the main characters and the action that filled this book. I was on the edge of my seat, and then a moment would come in the story with a powerful God and life lesson that made me pause and think. I think you will find yourself relate to Keren and Jared in one way or another, especially in terms of choices. How will you choose to view parts of your story, and will you choose God whatever your current circumstances?
I can't begin to say how much I loved this book! Tessa is always fabulous, and she doesn't disappoint. The Hidden Prince follows a young woman who starts out as a scribe in Daniel's household in Babylon but then finds herself as a tutor to the young prince Cyrus. The writing is beautiful and descriptive, the way the story comes together is fantastic, and the pacing is perfect. Fantastic fiction set in biblical times, one that you're going to want to be sure to read. I received a complimentary copy of this book, but all opinions expressed are mine alone.
This was my first book to read by Tessa Afshar and I really enjoyed it! I was pretty much hooked from the beginning. I loved how fast-paced it was! There was always something new happening which prompted me to keep turning pages and nearly finishing it in a day!
This book had some of my favorite tropes including: •Hidden identities and royalty •Childhood friends to lovers •Dangerous missions and adventures
I loved the characters, especially a certain shepherd boy who made me laugh numerous times with his humor and antics. ❤️ I also loved Keren and Jared and their story. Best friends-to-lovers is my favorite romantic trope and this one was done really well. It even had a bit of friends-to-enemies-to-lovers going on which was an interesting twist.
I haven’t read many historical fiction books set during Biblical times but after reading this one, I think that needs to change. I really enjoyed the historical aspect to the story. It was fascinating and really interesting!
In conclusion, I really enjoyed this book! It was gripping and fast-paced. The faith aspect of the story was wonderful as was the historical aspect. This was my first book to read by this author and it definitely won’t be my last!
Thank you to the publisher for sending me an eARC in exchange for a review! All opinions expressed in this review are my own.
Is it possible for Biblical fiction to be serious, whimsical, intriguing, romantic, prophetic, faith filled, daunting, grace filled, dangerous, redeeming, heart pumping, heart stirring, sad and joyful all at once? Yes, in the hands of Tessa Afshar it is exactly that. This work of fiction rang with the truth of historic detail and the culture of its time, bringing to life an important slice of Biblical history--through fiction--that I had not focused on. That joy and hope and reminder of the love of God for His people through all generations is uplifting. Beautifully written, steeped in grace, The Hidden Prince is a story to savor. Thankfully, the end of the story promises a sequel next year—one that I eagerly await.
The Hidden Prince by Tessa Afshar may be her best book yet. I thoroughly enjoyed turning each page imagining being in ancient Babylon and Persia watching history unfold. Can you even imagine being with the prophet Daniel and learning from him? The author did a wonderful job of setting the scenes without too much description and the romance between Keren and Jared was a beautiful thing to see unfurl. I loved the book and I highly recommend to anyone who loves Biblical fiction.
Wonderful Biblical Fiction by an author I admire! I love the way Tessa Afshar brings the research into the story and creates such great characters. I learned a lot and I was very inspired by the characters' journeys. Very well written and highly recommended!
Tessa can do no wrong for me when it comes to her biblical fiction. She has a way with the words she writes on the page. It grips you. It makes you question your stance. I loved it. I honestly can't even put my thoughts into a cohesive written review lol.
The story follows Keren and her friend Jared as they grow up from teens to adults. As teens they both have feelings for one another that is evident to the reader, but they don't admit it to one another for fear of different reasons. However, one day something happens that pulls them apart and on a road of increasing in their faith.
Keren is a woman of faith and integrity. She is sweet and pure. I loved her heart and willingness to do things. I loved her passion for writing -- I love writing myself! Keren was absolutely my favorite character.
Jared frustrated me with how he allowed his anger to settle in, but he was a real character I could relate to. I loved his faith journey and all that he explored throughout this book.
Daniel was amazing and inspiring. His wisdom was everything and more to me!
The storyline was amazing. The romance was clean and swoonworthy. The adventure was everything! Overall, I enjoyed this novel and look forward to the next release from Tessa in 2023!
Jdkskdndjsk (that’s me becoming utterly illiterate due to this amazing book).
This book is the essence of PERFECTION🥹💞.
Tessa’s ability to hook me from chapter one amazes me, because often it takes me much longer for me to get invested in a biblical fiction story. Her lyrical storytelling is magnificent and everything about this book is just perfection.
Keren and Jared’s story of love and forgiveness just pulled on all my heartstrings. Their romance was exceptional, unlike anything I’ve read in biblical fiction. The sweetness and purity of their love just made my heart explode🥹❤️.
The plot was so engaging as well. Keren’s quest to protect the hidden prince was full of twists and turns and I was glued until the story finished.
I cannot wait to read all of Tessa’s books! I’m convinced she is anointed, for God has used both of the books I’ve read of hers so far to bless me greatly.
Also (hehe), I’m SOO ready for her newest release in November 🤭🤭! It’s going to involve some characters from this book🥰🥰. It’s already in my cart ready to preorder.
Captivating. I'm inspired by these fictional characters, challenged by the biblical truths, intrigued by the historical figures, and in awe of the cultures, settings, and mighty power of our Sovereign Lord. Reading The Hidden Prince by Tessa Afshar evoked so many emotions that I'm not even sure I can identify them all.
I believe historical fiction set in biblical times (aka biblical fiction) should motivate the reader to dig deeper into the Word and explore the foundational Truth behind the story. Ms. Afshar has penned an exquisite story that challenges me to put the lessons learned by her characters into practice and explore the lives of those historical figures mentioned within the beloved pages of my Bible.
The Hidden Prince has given me a richer, fuller picture of Babylon, Media, and Persia to utilize as context and a deeper appreciation for the book of Daniel specifically. I'm grateful for the opportunity to journey through these pages and I highly recommend this book!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and was under no obligation to post a review. As an owner of JustRead Publicity Tours, I received compensation from the publisher and/or author to coordinate a promotional tour for this title. The opinions expressed are my own.
Fire and Lightning! Keren, female lead in The Hidden Prince by Tessa Afshar, captivated me with her perceptiveness and intelligence. Her “voice” invited me into her story and kept me turning the pages. I devoured the novel, excited for the plot and relationship developments. Then I read the book again, with knowledge of what would happen, and enjoyed it more the second time! With an ancient setting, beautiful prose, and spiritual truths, The Hidden Prince deserves to be savored.
Like so many of Tessa Afshar’s novels, The Hidden Prince, embeds spiritual themes into captivating fiction. The characters deal with so many things: following God’s will, setting one’s heart on truth, moving from upheaval to fruitfulness. My personal favorite was the theme about flourishing in the desert. I marked over forty quotes during my readings. If I read the novel again, I’d likely find more nuggets of truth to meditate on.
The Hidden Prince swirls together powerful themes, a thwarted romance, and royal intrigue. The story holds a strong dose of tragedy for Keren and Jared, creating depth and emotional investment for the reader, but without feeling overly heavy. I enjoyed reading The Hidden Prince and rate it five stars.
Disclosure of Material Connection: I was provided a copy of this book by the author or publisher. All opinions in this review are my own.
Wow, what a read! This is another beautifully crafted biblical suspense novel by Tessa Afshar! She is an absolute master of storytelling. I could hardly put this book down it was SO good! A captivating tale set during the latter part of Nebuchadnezzar's reign, this novel tells of how even in Babylon, God was with the Jews in their suffering and heard their cries for deliverance.
I would recommend this to older teens and adults due to brief bits of violence that were not inappropriate, but wouldn't be great for young readers.
Other older teen/adult content: a mention of a lecherous king and his grasping fingers going after women. A mention of a girl admitting to herself she was as flat as a stick. A flirtatious and lewd girl cruelly teases and harasses the young men with her maturing figure and risque clothing. She is later found worshipping in the pagan temple of Inanna, the Mesopotamian goddess of love and other things. (The same pagan goddess is known in other places in the world as Freya, Venus, Diana, Aphrodite, etc.)
Thank you to Tyndale House Publishers, the author, and Netgalley for this complimentary e-book. A positive review was not required of me, and the thoughts above are my own.
Thank you NetGalley and Tyndale House Publishers for accepting my request to read and review The Hidden Prince.
Author: Tessa Afshar Published: 11/08/22 Genre: Christian -- Historical Fiction
Where have I been? My first Afshar book and definitely not my last. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with The Hidden Prince. The perfect storm -- a lovely story, mug of coffee, comfy clothes, and nothing scheduled.
The story was easy to follow. There are scriptures given at the front of each chapter. There are also moments when the characters discuss needing prayer.
The author writers an intriguing, possible scenario. I took issue with a class line in her story; however, not so much that the overall pleasure was decreased. She made it work. There is not much that can be said without spoiling.
I would classify this as an adult-themed Christian based warm/cozy historical fiction. Definitely giftable.
This was my first book by Tessa Afshar and I will definitely pick up more!
The Hidden Prince was a beautiful story with themes of forgiveness and trusting God. This story is about a girl named Keren and is set during the time of Jewish captivity in Babylon. Keren is a scribe in Daniel’s house, but when a tragedy occurs, she finds herself fleeing far away. God provides a job for Keren in caring for a young boy. When the boy’s identity becomes known, Keren realizes that she may be witnessing one of Jeremiah’s prophecies coming to pass in her lifetime.
This book was full of depth and endearing characters, with lots of adventure and a bit of sweet/clean romance.
I listened to this biblical historical fiction on audio and loved it that way. If you are a biblical or historical fiction fan, I’d definitely recommend this one to you!
All I can say is yes! My favorite book of hers ever! Such an awesome story. Once you open it, it's very hard to put it down. I loved Cyrus's story! I did learn a lot about him and his family and it was certainly interesting. The Lord certainly has taught these people lessons on life for sure. Changes are hard but it's where God puts us at certain times in our lives. God's blessings through this novel are abundant. I definitely loved the Bible verses at the beginning of each chapter. This author has done an amazing job with this story. My favorite heroine of course is Keren. My heart went out to her during this book but it does show us that God can work miracles and that we can learn to adapt no matter where we are in our lives. This book will stay on my keeper shelf for sure. Thank you Tessa for another wonderful story to make my heart feel full and satisfied. My thanks for a copy of this book. I was NOT required to write a positive review. All opinions are my own. 5 stars for a job well done!
It was good! I'd definitely read the sequel, if the author wrote one!
I loved Afshar's descriptions! They were lovely and well done. I could actually see what happened!
The story made me laugh at points! But also made my heart burn, both with sadness and anger- At different points and simultaneously.
I learned new things! About Babylon, Persia, and Media!
Throughout the book, I wondered how much of the story was purely from the author's imagination, and how much was based on actual events. Afshar answers this question in her author's note! Along with giving a few references for further reading! I appreciated that.
One of the main characters frustrated me, through a large portion of the book. (I understood why they acted like they did, but wish the author had explored what true love is more.)
There are a few nit-picky things I didn't like, but they're not worth mentioning here. (: The story was good!
Intriguing Biblical fiction that explores the early life of Cyrus who would eventually become Cyrus the Great the founder of the Achaemenid Empire and king of Persia from 559 to 530 BC. He is venerated in the Hebrew Bible as Cyrus the Messiah for conquering Babylon and liberating the Jews from captivity.
Well written and very informative, I thoroughly enjoyed this Biblical fiction story from Tessa Afshar.
I really tried to give this a chance, but the first-person voice is not consistent with the time period. The main character's thoughts and words sound more like a modern teenager than a young Hebrew woman in the 6th century BC.
