Along with his past.
And his heart.
I have secrets of my own. Secrets that have bound us, body and soul, and shown me the past he guards so fiercely.
I know I should tell him the truth. The Savage King doesn’t tolerate betrayal.
But when the darkness falls, my secret may be the only thing that can save us all.

This is a gleaming, spicy, new adult fantasy romance inspired by Persian and Greek mythology, featuring rich world building, a complex hero, a strong heroine, and a diverse cast of found family. It’s the first in a series but with an emotionally rewarding finale that makes it a satisfying standalone.

Zaria, a slave, is desperately trying to save her family. She entered a competition, hoping she could win her freedom. Instead, she was claimed by the Savage King (Harken). Zaria then agrees to help Harken find whoever is behind the Dark Rip; in return, he will help her save her family.

I was initially excited to start the novel since the concept sounds intriguing. Unfortunately, I was struggling to get into the story. First, too much telling instead of showing and info-dumping. The author could of focus on using more descriptive and immersive language to show the reader what is happening in the story, rather than simply telling them. Second, too many names were thrown around. I wish the author had introduced a few key characters first, giving us time to become familiar with them before introducing more. Lastly, the pacing was too slow.

I wasn't invested enough to want to pick the novel back up once I had put it down.

Overall, not for me.

I made the mistake of starting this book quite late in the evening so wasn’t perhaps as pulled in initially as I’d hoped for as this book has quite a complex world with magic and very ambiguous characters. Zaria is our protagonist and as this begins she not only loses her brother but meets Harken, the terrifying Savage King. Zaria is used to looking after her siblings and making hard decisions but when she enters a race hoping to find freedom for herself and those she loves things go badly wrong leaving her connected in more ways than one to Harken !
So we have a heroine who it’s easy to empathise with coupled with a somewhat tortured hero who keeps everyone at a distance. This story felt like a game to the characters with their own agendas as the tenuous peace is under threat. There are definitely two sides in play here as some seek to repeat the past although cleverly the author manages to include flashbacks which help the reader understand the history. If it’s romance you seek than I have to caution that it’s incredibly slow burn with scenes that perhaps are not as hot and detailed as some readers might prefer so definitely felt more young adult.
The society here is very much divided with slavery, Demons , Alchemists and even a Dragon ! There’s lots of action here too as Zaria faces trials that surprised me as it involves gondolas so almost a Venetian feel at times. I think once the reader sinks into the story and understands the history of these characters it is very much a page turner. That ending though is very much a cliffhanger so you have been warned !
This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

This book took me completely by surprise! It’s perfect for fans of dark fantasy romances like An Ember in the Ashes that have a lush world building 🔥

We follow the story of Zaria, a young woman who has been a slave as long as she can remember. Everyday is a struggle to survive but she stays hopeful that she will find a way to free herself and her siblings from the horrifying clutches of Hodda, their Slavemaster. Zaria would do anything to obtain their freedom: even if it means participating in the bloody Braid Race, where only one winner comes out alive. After encountering a mysterious stranger in the woods, Zarias fate might just change after all…

Harken is a morally grey anti-hero known as The Savage King… he calls her “little criminal” and I adore it 👀 Prepare yourselves for some “Who did this to you” as well as forced proximity ❤️🔥 both some of my favourites tropes!

The world building is heavily detailed! The magical system of the story, specially the Weavers and how they manipulate magic by weaving are very unique. The slave braids are also magical, tying the wearer to its holder. The beginning, specially the prologue and first chapters, explore the complex world and terms which made it difficult to grasp at first, so I was grateful that the author included a glossary at the end of the book.

Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy for review!

The plot of the story has such great potential, but the overload of information killed the book for me. There were so many characters introduced that I had a hard time keeping track of who was who. It didn't help that there was talk of a character, and then we met them several chapters later, and this is after introducing even more characters. There was also minimal development. There is a character introduced as The Kraken King, aka Roarke. He was referred to as TKK through a chunk of the book, then later just Roarke. Changing the way he was referred to was inevitably perplexing as the name Roarke was used minimally when talking about him. I often had to search character names on my Kindle to see who was who.

Additionally, I had a couple of continuty issues. The MC has a run-in with her love interest, and the mcf states she doesn't see him for 2 days. When she sees him, they talk about their interaction that morning. I went back 2x to make sure I didn't miss something, and I didn't. The build-up between the love interest was not very good, and I wasn't feeling my usual will, they won't they. Quite frankly, I found the love story lackluster.

There was so much world building detail throughout the book. It never really stopped. Also, there are so many stories from side characters. Both of these things were too mu h and made me lose interest at times. In the end, I understand why all the side character stories happened, but I didn't need 6 or 8 characters to get me there.

I definitely don't understand who the good guys were in the war. I also feel unclear on each of the different kinds of classes of people and what they can do. Apparently, anyone can weave. There should be an appendix that tells you about each land, house, magic and the natives of each land because it's a jumbled mess. I'm completely unsure of what and who Ingold are.

This book gets a 2 because the story is a good idea, but much of the book was convoluted. This book just needs a good editor. I am probably not going to continue the series unless the 2nd book has rave reviews.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Woven in Darkness by Lucy Holden was such a slow start that I’ve put it to the side several times. I listened to it and it was narrated by Heather Takano. I’m going to stop right here and say that Heather Takano is probably one of my favorites. She tells a beautiful story adding so much to the story. But alas it still wasn’t enough to compel me to finish. It dragged and I was confused and I just couldn’t do it. I always try to finish my books but this is not one of them.

I am so thankful to have received an ARC of this beautiful story!! I just finished, and wow, I am beside myself.

The world that Lucy Holden spun is fantastical and amazing. There is so much complexity and depth in the world that it does take her some time to build it, but I never felt that the world building slowed the story down. I was kept engaged the entire time.

I don't want to give spoilers, so I will try to round out my review without them. I have to say, though, the way she provided the flashbacks for Zaria to see into Harken's past was phenomenal. Those snippets were so eye-opening and really explained why he was the way he was.

I also loved Everett and Brooks soooooo much. Huxley, too, of course, because who would not love a sweet, cuddly storm dragon 🥰

I was so enamored with this world that I finished the book within 24 hours and was pleased with the ending. I was just itching for an ending that wouldn't be intense and violent as the rest of the journey, and I was glad to be able to feel relief.

Definitely recommend picking up this high fantasy when it is released!!

I liked the storyline and the characters. It was slow for me and seemed to drag on. The ending had closure for everyone except for Huxley. I need to know what happened to Huxley.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing a copy of this audiobook for me to review! All thoughts below are my own.

TLDR:
Overall: 3.5 / 5 rounded up
Plot: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
Worldbuilding: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
Narration: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
Spice: 🌶️🌶️/5
Character development: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Synopsis:
She and her siblings were enslaved as children, and have grown up under the thumb of a horrid master. She’s taken the brunt of the beatings to protect her family. As an adult, she’s determined to get them all out, but that’s easier wished than done. When her plans fall apart, Harken offers her a path to freedom by helping him pull strings among the elite of their society.

Harken is the lord of the Weaver Court, but ever since he’s locked the court away and denied new Weavers to the world, they call him the Savage King. He’s secretive, discriminating with his trust, and utterly disgusted about having a slave. She realizes that their connection binds their minds together as well.

Is this for readers of ACOTAR? Yes, it has a lot of the same themes without being a rip off. A girl is brought into a court she knows nothing about by a powerful ruler, but there’s a wider spin to it since his agenda is political. The ruler she’s falling for is a little more like Rhysand, with a secret court locked away, and maybe a blacker reputation than he deserves. Their chemistry sparkles, but Harken refuses to go very far while she’s still enslaved so as not to take advantage of her (spice level is consistent with a YA-level of descriptive language).

Strong start for the world-building! Lucy Holden clearly thought through the slavery system, and the parts of the world we see are multi-layered. Harken is a barrier to learning too much since he’s so secretive about the true way of things.

I somewhat disagree that you could read this as a standalone. This is definitely the first of a series, one building block toward a wider climax. My rating of this book could rise as I read additional tomes in the series.

Audiobook was great!

When I’ve found a good book, I really really struggle to have the self control to put down my book and go to sleep 😅 and this is the last book that left me sleep deprived! 😆 Woven in Darkness is a unique slow-burn fantasy romance featuring a fierce female main character and a morally grey male main character…and you know that we LOVE that combo! While I loved the characters in this story, I think it really shines with its world building and fast paced plot. The world building is so thorough and it even includes a glossary to reference while reading! This was super helpful to me because sometimes heavy world building came become overwhelming, but the glossary helped me keep things straight. I think if you enjoy books like Trial of the Sun Queen or even Folk of the Air, you’ll really enjoy this book!

Thanks to the author for gifting me a copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Perfect for fans of slow burn fantasy romance and morally grey characters! I read this book via audiobook and it was pretty great!

The story has a slow start but it’s definitely character driven which is great because i enjoyed learning about them! Loved the dynamic between the main characters, Harken and Zaria!

Zaria was strong natured and driven to survive for the ones she loves. Harken was the harsh yet mindful MMC, one that makes sure things are done right and wrongs are handled. The forced proximity in this stirring romance is thick. Both together definitely are great and working together only made it more enjoyable to see the story unravel!

The world building was beautifully woven just like the title! We have gorgeous sceneries and intricate magic. One thing I absolutely loved was being able to learn the world thru the glossary first of all, this is something all fantasy books should have. Looking forward to more by this author!

Huge thanks to the author for sending me a copy. All opinions are my own.

It took me a bit to get into this book because it was hard to grasp what was going on in this world. But I hung on because I loved Zaria and Harken. Eventually most of the world was revealed with some patience. It’s a dark and unique idea of a universe that I loved exploring. I do wish there was a little more steamy love with the main characters, but I’m happy how things turned out all the same. It was a lovely little ending, so I will be curious to see what can happen next. And I found out there’s already a whole universe of other books in this woven world to explore!

I really wanted to like this book. In reading the description, it has so much potential. However, it overall fell flat to me. I found myself in a little bit of a slump while reading this and going to other books.

This is the story of Zaria who is a slave with her four "siblings" in an area of the world called the Seam. Her only goal in life is to gain her freedom and then her siblings. She decides to enter into the Braid Race but before she does she encounters a stranger who heals her. She later learns that he is none other than Harken, the Savage King, AKA the ruler of the Woven Court. She ends up losing the race but instead of being killed as the losers normally are, Harken buys her braid (which announces her as a slave). She is to follow him and help him along on his journey to discover who has been opening rips in the world and allowing creatures from other worlds to come and bring destruction with them.

There are a few things in this book that were hard for me. The chemistry between Harken and Zaria is not really there for me. Zaria's relationships seem to develop really fast without a lot of interaction. There almost seems to be too much going on. I dig fantasy books but this one had a ton of information and worlds and things happening that I almost feel like I missed the first book that helped slowly introduce these things. I found myself getting overwhelmed and not really being invested while reading this. I am debating on pushing through and reading book 2 just I know what happens next and to see if things develop better.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

"Be afraid, tomorrow," he says. "But let your fear lend you wings. Let it serve you, not kill you."
And that is exactly what she did. It changes everything for her.

If you are looking for an epic fantasy and epic romance, this is the book for you. I had to stop myself from trying to read faster to somehow know what was happening next, because I couldn't wait to know. I had to drag myself away from this book to keep up with my responsibilities. I can't wait for the next book, and I highly recommend this one to anyone who loves fantasy! Oh, and we can't forget MORALLY GREY MALE MAIN CHARACTERS! *swoon*

I received an advance review copy free in return for my honest opinion.

Zaria lives only to protect her siblings. Her goal is to enter the dangerous Braid Race, a win-or-die competition that gives her freedom from the shadow braid she's had for her entire life. With that freedom, she will be able to free her siblings as well. However, everything goes wrong when her brother falls into a Dark Rip and her sisters were bought by Indigold lords. Harken, the Savage King saves Zaria from meeting the same fate as her brother, but at a cost. When she is edged out of winning the Braid Race, Harken does the unthinkable and claims her as his slave. They both know she's bait. What they don't expect is to have feelings for one another.

I normally don't enjoy fantasy books. I just can't get into them. This one, though, pulled me in immediately. Zaria is a young woman whose only purpose has been to free her siblings, so when she loses that, she has to discover who she really is. Likewise, Harken is a mystery, even to himself, and he punishes himself greatly for mistakes of the past. They both have to come to terms with the choices they've made and learn to move on.

There is a cast of characters in this book that are interesting and dynamic. The world-building is vivid and complex. It can be a little hard for me to get into that normally, but I enjoyed the writing in this book so much that I got swept up in it all. I am also a huge fan of found family stories, and this one fits the bill.

While this is meant to be a spicy book, the levels of spice are quite low. If you are new to spicy books, or just don't enjoy the really spicy ones, this one is probably just right.

It has vibes like ACOTAR, The Shadow and bone and Hunger games. Author has created such a perilous and painful world where Zaria’s brother has been taken away by dark rip, her sisters have been claimed by Indigold lords and Levin has to take Doron’s place in braid race. While Zaria’s fight for freedom for herself and her siblings is still going on. Tangled in the woven net of secrets of dark rip, truth, mystery, bargain and intricate feelings, will she be able to make a right choice? Deception, conspiracy, magic, secrets, shadow bargain and intricate mysteries are interwoven in the plot.

While Harken has a dark past and darkness with him and Zaria is bound to slave braid. She is seeking truth and freedom while he is trying to unveil the mystery of dark rip. Only they both can help each other but will they be able to prevent the danger that is lumbering upon them? While in the midst of all that, they both develops an unbreakable bond.

Well the secrets of each character are way too deep and backstory of characters is so profound and interconnected with the mystery of dark rip. The book will keep you guessing till the end and I loved the character development and ending. I think the next book will take us deep into shadow bargain and dark rip. Because I definitely want more of it.

Zaria and her four siblings have been slaves as long as they can remember. Found as small children with shadow braids around their necks, they've dreamed of a day where they could be free.

Zaria sees their chance in the Braid Race, a race where slaves compete for their freedom. The winner has their braid unwoven; the losers are killed. If she can win the race, she can be free and find a way to buy her siblings' freedom.

Strange forces are at work to stop her. A tall, savage stranger saves her life, heals her wounds, and sparks her curiosity. Powerful enemies emerge. And a forbidden temptation may be Zaria's salvation...or her undoing.

Woven in Darkness is one of the best fantasy novels I've read this year. It has a strong FMC, morally grey hero, immersive worldbuilding without info dumps, a slow burn romance, intrigue, and a dragon!

What more could you ask for??

Harken is a fascinating character. I love that we're given glimpses into his past through their connection. It makes it more heart-wrenching to see it all unravel. His care for Zaria is exactly how I'd imagine someone created vs born would act.

Zaria and her siblings have so much potential, and I hope we get to see more about their futures. Her sisters have been through hell and her younger brother may rival her older brother for the title of Strong Stoic.

The cast of side characters made the story rich and easy to get lost in. Exactly how much does Gemory know? What happened to Huxley? Will the wolves play a pivotal role in the next book? Can Harken's sworn enemy be redeemed? I feel like that meme of Sheldon from Big Bang Theory - I MUST KNOW!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

4.5 ⭐️

I am so honored to have received an Advanced Review Copy ahead of this books release in exchange for a willing and honest review!
This is a complex world filled with both lovable and hate-able characters 😄 all dynamic and realistic (read grey) and well woven into the plot. (Pun obviously intended!)

Our underdog FMC is a harden slave, protective of her sibling and with high hopes of winning her freedom and buying that of her found family’s.
She is thrown into an intricate plot, used and bought and moved around the chess board of politics and interest, never losing her cunning intelligence and natural kindness and sense of purpose.
Our MMC is a grey af hero, with a soft heart under a harden shell, just like we love them 😏

The flashbacks give us the story we need to understand our hero and the story that brought us to the present time intrigues and games.

The romance is a sloooow burn and the eventual spice is YA level (for those that aren’t fans of spicy scenes, this is perfect!)

There’s soooo much feeling reading this Ooooof!
Disgust, hate, rage, love, friendship, caring, wonder, passion, violence, grief,… You name it, i felt it! 😂

If I haven’t convinced you to read this yet, here’s some glimpses to what you can find:
Slaves, masters, “Who did this?”, found family, street urchins, magic, dragon!, fluid characters, krakens, a flying carpet, shifters, intrigue, political games, Venice Carnaval parties, Rome carrick racing - Hunger Games style, dubious characters, darkwine, Veneza canal’s racing, training, flower gardens and a priest island hidden in the mists!

Tw: slavery, violence, war, death, brutal games, none is overdone or too explicit.

I think I would have probably better understood what exactly is happening in this book if I had read it instead of listening to the audiobook. Not that there was anything wrong with the narration; it was narrated quite well but the world building was pretty confusing and as a result my attention waned in places. The story is supposed to have taken some inspiration from Greek and Persian mythology but I couldn't figure out how it was incorporated. I think readers who love fantasy as a genre might like this story.

My thanks to NetGalley, the publisher Fehu Press and the author for the ALC of the book.

I received an ARC to review and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this! It felt similar to Daughter of No Worlds at the start but near mid way through the book the story really picked up. The FMC in this is so fierce and determined and I love how her priority through this entire book stayed on saving her siblings. You could really feel the love she had for them.
I do wish there was a little more romance through this as it was a SLOW BURN but can’t wait to see more in the next books!
Overall it’s really well written and love how there is chapter artwork and summaries of different aspects of the world at the end of the book

Woven in Darkness was an intriguing story that takes place in a well developed world with a unique and vibrant magic system. I am so thankful that I received an ARC of this story as it was a wonderful weekend read to escape into the world of Astria.

We follow Zaria as she fights to change the life that her and her siblings have been forced into. Encountering new places, people, challenges, and dangers.
We get to see life in this world as one of the lowest people on the class rungs and then as one of the highest and most privileged people. All the while knowing that danger and intrigue lies around any corner.

I can see why other reviewers are comparing to to ACOTAR, and I will admit it has some similar feelings to it, I would say though that one big difference for me is that she is given a choice fairly early on in the forced-proximity aspects to opt to stay or leave that situation. Which I really appreciate.
I would compare it to later relationships over early ones in that series.
However, like ACOTAR, it is not always apparent that the male lead is not white. I was definitely about 50% through the book before I realized that he was a person of color, and that was because it made it clear a few times in quick succession.
I went back and listened to the introduction of Harken again, and I would say that it is fair I was confused. There are only once when features are described to let me know that he is not white until it is used in a romantic setting. Other than his skin tone being mentioned once and a strong jawline... there are no clues to his ethnicity that make it clear to my minds eye that he is a person of color. I think what threw me is that I was listening sped up while also catching the hair color but not the skin color description. (I will also say, his eye color is often mentioned and that inclined me to give the character a more 'otherworldy' skin tone.)
What really made me think that he was probably a person of color was how often he is called "savage"... which is probably the only place where I wish the race was made more evident or where a different wording choice was made.
I would also like to say that I do not think these issues could have been resolved by swapping which character was not white... because than the slave would be the person of color and that would feel allllll kinds of icky.

Even taking into account my concerns with the race portrayal in the story (which I honestly would encourage you to ask someone who is not as pale as a ghost to get a better idea of what to look for when ensuring good representation) I did really enjoy this series. I liked that it wasn't a high spice book but had a little with a lot of plot. I liked the world that was created and the lore and background that has depth and spans centuries of time in the world.
I loved that the world felt fleshed out.
I never felt like there was exposition in places that didn't make sense. That even when we are being told things through the lens of Zaria finding out, she does not come off as ignorant or stupid, rather that she just couldn't know because she was never provided the space to learn those things.

I LOVE me a good fantasy romance with a lot of intrigue and plot and this book did that for me.
I became invested in the characters and their stories, hopeful and concerned. Excited and tense.

Overall, I would absolutely read this again and would love to read more deep and engaging worlds and stories by this author.

Just finished reading an incredible book set in the captivating world of Astria! This high fantasy tale explores the struggles of Zaria, a strong and determined protagonist who fights against the prevalence of slavery. From the moment Zaria found herself by a dark rip as a child, she became the guiding light for her newfound siblings. But when tragedy strikes and her brother is lost, Zaria makes an unexpected connection with the enigmatic Savage King. 😳 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The author, Lucy, has crafted a complex and immersive world that kept me hooked from start to finish. The concept of the slave braid connection is truly fascinating, and the competitions had me on the edge of my seat, especially the thrilling slave race and the exhilarating Maverick race with gondolas! 🛶 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The characters in this book are incredibly likable, and I loved unraveling the mysteries behind their true intentions. There is a character who identifies as 'they,' which took me a moment to grasp because at first it was a bit confusing, but that might be because English is not my native language. I do love this character and I’m sure you will too!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I listened to the audiobook, and the narrator did an excellent job of bringing the story to life. Though I occasionally struggled with some names and magical terms, I would recommend having the ebook handy as a reference. The narrator's use of different voices for various characters added an extra layer of immersion. 🎧 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

This book left me craving more, as it ends with an exhilarating cliffhanger! 😱 So brace yourself for an intense conclusion. If you enjoy a slow-burn romance, a richly imagined high fantasy world, and a strong-willed protagonist who embraces the consequences of her actions, then this book is perfect for you. 🔥

“Take what you want and pay for it”⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Okay Read

I received a copy from Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you Lucy Holden for the opportunity to read and listen to your book. This was an alright read. This is the first book of a multi-part Fantasy Romance saga called the Woven Saga. The premise of the story was really interesting and drew me in, but I did feel a little bit disappointed with the story because the story was too slow-paced. I love listening to the audiobook while reading the physical or digital copy. In this story, Zaria, the heroine, is a slave who wants to protect her siblings and win her freedom. Along the way, a series of unfortunate events occurred, and she was sold to the Savage King, Harken. This is a slow-burn romance. I wish that the pace of the book was faster. Also, I would have liked it if we got more chapters from the hero's perspective. As for the characters, I liked Harken. To me, he was really interesting to read about. I liked that we got to know about what happened to him to make him the Savage King. Zaria was another good character. I think she is intelligent and protective. She does whatever she can to protect her family, and that is something that I think we can all relate to. She experienced a lot of things from the grief of losing her brother in the beginning. I thought the romance was good. I thought that they had great chemistry. I will continue the series to see what happens next, but I hope that the pace will be faster. Overall, an okay read.

Unbelievable!!! I have to start by saying I have been in a reading slump for some time now and nothing has been able to pull me out of it until this book!!! I also have to state that I received an advanced audiobook to listen to and review. That being said this is the best book I have listened to all year! If I could give it 10 stars I would. Think "Priory If The Orange Tree” meets "Hunger Games” and "ACOTAR”! The world building is brilliant but complex and even though it is a YA high fantasy I would say this complex political world is really for Adults. The spice level is only at a one but the magical system is beautiful and did I mention there is a dragon!! Honestly, I LOVE this dragon, she is as loving as a kitten and and as fierce any dragon in GOT! As I stated I listen to this as an audiobook and I have to say the narrator was BRILLIANT! She does have a British accent which I love but her character voices were so good. I think with this complex world building it really helps to have someone reading this to you. Now there is a some small trigger that should be noted in this such as slaves that are controlled through these magically woven braids that sit around the slaves necks and the slave owner controls them with a ring. I could go on and on about how much I love this book but I do not like to give away anything and take away even one ounce of this story. This author is my new favorite hands down!!

Thanks to NetGalley, Fehu Press, & Lucy Holden for providing a copy of Woven in Darkness.

Woven in Darkness focuses on a young slave named Zaria, who was found with a slave braid and a bag of coin that replenishes itself. Zaria hopes to compete for freedom for not only herself, but her four other siblings.

The first ~20% of this was very tedious to me. It's very typical YA fantasy, and the worldbuilding is a bit of a mess. It's got similar vibes to SJM books, but the world is not thought out enough to back it up.

I genuinely could not tell you what an Indigo is... Are they shifters? Witches???? No clue. Also, it just felt weird that Zaria had no idea about the war, even though it only happened 20 years prior? You would think it would be way more widely understood what happened.

There is too much telling instead of showing, with certain characters' sole purpose being to just talk at Zaria about what she conveniently has been wondering about with no prompting on the subject at all.

I did eventually get sucked in, and the eventual reveal of who was behind the plotting was well done.

With a bit better understanding of the magic at work and exploration of the world, I think this series could go in a really cool direction.

Please please PLEASE just do not pull an FBAA and give her a level up each book.

What a remarkable book!
Covered all the bases and delved into all the feels.
Some spoilers below, but really just an outline of the story…there’s so much more!!
This book intersperses family, friends, lovers, magical creatures, nasty/dark creatures, other worldly realms, fantasy, life, death, fighting to the death, princes and princesses (sort of) and a dragon.
Based on a family with 3 daughters and 2 sons. The oldest daughter (Zaria) is the protector who watches out for all of them. Until things go terribly wrong… and one of them is taken away…and two are sold as slaves… to the Indigold Lords. But even worse, Zaria is bought by the Savage King…the one who is the most evil of all! Or is he????
Zaria dreams of freedom for herself and her family. She realizes the only way she can become free is by entering a race…one that is known throughout the land to be truly savage. Most who enter do not leave the race…they die!
Great character development. Wonderful descriptions of all that is going on in their world. And…pulls you right in from the beginning!
Thanks to Net Galley for providing me with an ARC Audiobook! (My first ever!!)
Looking forward to continuing the series as the books release!

Thank you NetGalley for the Arc!

This book is magical, intense and confusing in one package. I thoroughly enjoyed the story, but found it difficult to let the book guide me through as the magic system, the politics and overall world building was so heavy and intricate it was hard to digest and understand.

There were so many characters that I often felt lost and ended up having to take notes to keep track of who was who. And how they fit in the world.

Additionally, I felt the heavy use of terminology specific to the world was used to early and not explained well enough so I spent 40% of the book confused and unable to understand what was happening.

In saying that, the actual story was beautiful, I loved it! Once I got the hang of the world, I extremely enjoyed myself. And the love interest 🤤. So overall would recommend this book if you’re into high fantasy worlds!

thank you netgalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

in short: read it.

the world building was so well crafted and probably the most original I've come across. i've never read anything not even remotely similar. plus as someone who loves politics in books i have to say i was not disappointed. the plot was fast and interesting and kept you on edge. lastly, the characters were loveable and well sculpted.

the only downside was the author's tendency to info dump to the point were, even someone who has experience in fantasy stories heavy on world building, would many times find themselves lost in a sea of facts, lore and names. a more gradual presentation of the world would have made the book perfect.

do recommend

Was ok. Enjoyed the idea but I’m a little confused with the world building. In the beginning I was lost and sort of lost intrepid in trying to figure out what was going on at the same time pay attention to new people with new powers.
