As her “Golden Girls” character Rose Nylund, Betty White once declared, “I don’t want a man. I just want to come home from work and have someone jump up on my lap, and lick my face, and fetch a ball when I throw it.” Well, now the late actress’ millions of fans (human and dog) can lick her face whenever they want, because she’s being honored with a “forever” stamp, the United States Postal Service announced on Monday.
The new stamp, to be released in 2025, is “graced with her likeness” and exemplifies her “spritely sense of fun,” said the USPS. It comes three years after she passed away on Dec. 31, 2021, just weeks shy of her 100th birthday, which would have been on Jan. 17, 2022.
The USPS announced, “The Betty White stamp, sold on a pane of 20, features a digitally created portrait of the cherished star against a violet-colored background and, in a lighter shade, bubbly spots that befit her sparkling personality. She is portrayed wearing a polka-dotted blue top. ‘Betty White’ is printed in white near the bottom of the stamp artwork. ‘FOREVER USA’ is printed just below, in violet. Her name also appears centered atop the white selvage, also in violet.”
Art director Greg Breeding designed the Betty White stamp with original art by Dale Stephanos. A specific release date in 2025 has yet to be revealed.
The nonagenarian’s legendary career spanned more than eight decades, including iconic roles on sitcoms like “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” “The Golden Girls,” and “Hot in Cleveland.” She was also known for being an ally to animals of all shapes and sizes.
White won five Primetime Emmys, one Daytime Emmy, and one regional Emmy, and “each one is very special,” she told Gold Derby in 2011. “I know it’s so corny and such a cliche, but the exciting part of the Emmys is the nomination. You are singled out from a lot of people. By the time you get to the actual award itself, you’ve had your thrill.” See her list of Emmy wins below.
The actress was inducted into the TV Hall of Fame in 1996, and she received the Screen Actors Guild life achievement award in 2010. She was honored at the 2018 Emmys by presenters Alec Baldwin and Kate McKinnon, who joked that “she still thinks about all those Emmys she didn’t win and she’s still bitter.” White laughed as she stepped out on stage to a riotous standing ovation.
