Former Representative for South Carolina’s 5th District

Burt was the representative for South Carolina’s 5th congressional district and was a Democrat. He served from 1851 to 1853.

He was previously the representative for South Carolina’s 5th congressional district as a Democrat from Dec 3, 1849 to Mar 3, 1851; the representative for South Carolina’s 5th congressional district as a Democrat from Dec 6, 1847 to Mar 3, 1849; the representative for South Carolina’s 5th congressional district as a Democrat from Dec 1, 1845 to Mar 3, 1847; and the representative for South Carolina’s 5th congressional district as a Democrat from Dec 4, 1843 to Mar 3, 1845.

Legislators who enslaved Black people

Burt was among more than 1,800 legislators who enslaved Black people. The Washington Post compiled the first database of slaveholding members of Congress by examining thousands of pages of census records and historical documents. Burt was one of them.
