In Walter Breen’s Encyclopedia of United States and Colonial Proof Coins, 1722-1989, the listing for the 1871 Three Cents proof starts off by mentioning that the 71 touch or about touch, date high and then continues by mentioning rev. long faint line slanting down to right above center.

1878 Proofs - 3 Cent Nickel
Some 1878 proofs come with the reverse rotated clockwise to about the 12:30 clock position. In Allan Gifford s book, The Ultimate Guide To Three Cent Nickels, 1865 To 1889, the proofs with this reverse rotation are designated variety number P01b.
