Nice, clean beach that was well-visited, but never too busy to the point of struggling to find a place. The water is warm and clear, and there are some guys setup on the beach who offer jet skis, par… Full review by kionsomewhereelse

For starters, I wouldn't swim in sea near touristy spots, as it is so polluted with rubish and micro plastics and sewerage. Kata beach had sump oil which took me 2 days to remove from my feet. Plus it cost $5 to hire a beach lounge. If you hire a lounge your belongings should be safer. The locals are very caring and helpful.

We are looking to visit with our 2 children at the end of May. They are keen to do water activities such as snorkelling, swimming and paddle boards. I have read that the sea is red flagged most days throughout the whole of the low season. Can anyone please advise? Obviously we will not swim if it’s not safe.

Kata beach is generally safe, and there are plenty of lifeguards about. But like most of Phuket, you do get regular thunderstorms, and when it is stormy the waves get bigger and the currents get stronger. When it gets dangerous the lifeguards put the red flags up. But sometimes it is only for a few hours, it really depends on the weather which can be quite changeable in May as it is the start of the rainy season. So, depending on how long you stay, you will probably get some calm sunny days and some rainy / stormy days.
