Unsurprisingly, in recent years, the field has witnessed more interest in the research of values "beyond accuracy." This trend is particularly pronounced in the news domain where recommender systems perform parts of the editorial function, required to uphold journalistic values of news organizations. In the literature, various values and approaches have been proposed and evaluated. This paper reviews the current state of the proposed news recommender systems (NRS). We perform a systematic literature review, analyzing 183 papers. The primary aim is to study the development, scope, and focus of value-aware NRS over time. In contrast to previous surveys, we are particularly interested in identifying the range of values discussed and evaluated in the context of NRS, and embrace an interdisciplinary view. We identified a total of 40 values, categorized into five value groups. Most research on value-aware NRS has taken an algorithmic approach, whereas conceptual discussions are comparably scarce. Often, algorithms are evaluated by accuracy-based metrics, but the values are not evaluated with respective measures. Overall, our work identifies research gaps concerning values that have not received much attention. Values need to be targeted on a more fine-grained and specific level.}, added-at = {2024-03-28T14:44:12.000+0100}, author = {Bauer, Christine and Bagchi, Chandni and Hundogan, Olusanmi A. and van Es, Karin}, biburl = {https://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/26180fddcafb1701a449d560fe7f29626/bauerc}, doi = {10.1145/3654805}, id = {3654805, 10.1145/3654805, TORS-2023-0089}, interhash = {b4e14321b6aafb72776f51f77dbf6299}, intrahash = {6180fddcafb1701a449d560fe7f29626}, issn = {2770-6699}, journal = {ACM Transactions on Recommender Systems}, keywords = {myown news recsys review systematic values}, language = {en}, month = {6}, number = 2, pages = {1-40}, publisher = {ACM}, subjectarea = {Recommender Systems}, timestamp = {2024-06-06T20:08:50.000+0200}, title = {Where are the Values? The fight between Nigerian and Biafran soldiers lasted from 6 July 1967 to 12 January 1970, when Biafra surrendered. Throughout the struggle, notably between 1968 and 1969, the media from across the globe descended to Nigeria to cover it for their readers, with varying degrees of success. Inoculation theory has been put forward as a way to reduce susceptibility to misinformation by informing people about how they might be misinformed, but its scalability has been elusive both at a theoretical level and a practical level. We developed five short videos that inoculate people against manipulation techniques commonly used in misinformation: emotionally manipulative language, incoherence, false dichotomies, scapegoating, and ad hominem attacks. In seven preregistered studies, i.e., six randomized controlled studies (n = 6464) and an ecologically valid field study on YouTube (n = 22,632), we find that these videos improve manipulation technique recognition, boost confidence in spotting these techniques, increase people’s ability to discern trustworthy from untrustworthy content, and improve the quality of their sharing decisions. These effects are robust across the political spectrum and a wide variety of covariates. We show that psychological inoculation campaigns on social media are effective at improving misinformation resilience at scale. News Aggregator is simply an online software which collects new stories and events around the world from various sources all in one place. News aggregator plays a very important role in reducing time consumption, as all of the news that would be explored through more than one website will be placed only in a single location. Also, summarizing this aggregated content absolutely will save reader’s time. A proposed technique used called the Text Rank algorithm that showed promising results for summarization. A table d’hôte (translates as host’s table) meal is a sequence of courses that create a balanced and enjoyable dining experience for a guest. Likewise, we believe news RS should strive to create a similar experience for the users by satisfying the news-diet needs of a user. While extant news RS considers criteria such as diversity and serendipity, and RS bundles have been studied for other contexts such as tourism, table d’hôte goes further by ensuring the recommended articles satisfy a diverse set of user needs in the right proportions and in a specific order. In table d’hôte, available articles need to be stratified based on the different ways that news can create value for the reader, building from theories and empirical research in journalism and user engagement. Using theories and empirical research from communication on the uses and gratifications (U&G) consumers derive from media, we define two main strata in a table d’hôte news RS, each with its own substrata: 1) surveillance, which consists of information the user needs to know, and 2) serendipity, which are the articles offering unexpected surprises. The diversity of the articles according to the defined strata and the order of the articles within the list of recommendations are also two important aspects of the table d’hôte in order to give the users the most effective reading experience. We propose our vision, link it to the existing concepts in the RS literature, and identify challenges for future research.}, added-at = {2022-03-14T03:52:48.000+0100}, author = {Abdollahpouri, Himan and Malthouse, Edward C. and Konstan, Joseph A. and Mobasher, Bamshad and Gilbert, Jeremy}, biburl = {https://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/2b76a2e58f5b28a243ce6761d463c6e6d/brusilovsky}, booktitle = {Companion Proceedings of the Web Conference 2021}, description = {Toward the Next Generation of News Recommender Systems | Companion Proceedings of the Web Conference 2021}, doi = {10.1145/3442442.3452327}, interhash = {a78301bac992157e1d88dd00d2f9cb36}, intrahash = {b76a2e58f5b28a243ce6761d463c6e6d}, keywords = {news news-recommender recommender www2021}, month = apr, pages = {402-406}, publisher = {{ACM}}, timestamp = {2022-03-14T03:52:48.000+0100}, title = {Toward the Next Generation of News Recommender Systems}, url = {https://doi.org/10.1145%2F3442442.3452327}, year = 2021 } @inproceedings{engelmann2021ircologne, added-at = {2022-01-18T16:24:20.000+0100}, author = {Engelmann, Björn and Schaer, Philipp}, biburl = {https://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/2ffdeae1d1651e977a8d6505af102ee82/irgroup_thkoeln}, booktitle = {TREC}, interhash = {00d2327d437a3dcdf4ef470525fae705}, intrahash = {ffdeae1d1651e977a8d6505af102ee82}, keywords = {2021 background engelmann extraction joie linking myown news relation schaer trec}, pdf = {https://trec.nist.gov/pubs/trec30/papers/IR-Cologne-N.pdf}, publisher = {National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)}, timestamp = {2023-10-25T18:01:51.000+0200}, title = {IRCologne at TREC 2021 News Track - Relation-based re-ranking for background linking}, year = 2021 } @article{sales2021assessing, abstractnote = {Media bias is a worldwide concern. Although automated methods exist for the analysis of various forms of media bias, language is still an important barrier toward spotting worldwide differences in reporting. In this paper, we propose a methodology based on word embeddings, lexicon translation, and document similarity to assess media bias in news articles published in different idioms. We model media bias under the perspective of subjective language use, i.e., the more subjective the content of a news article is, the more biased it is. Our core assumption is that news articles reporting the same events, but written in different languages, should have similar levels of subjectivity; otherwise, we may have spotted biased text. Our method consists of using translated versions of subjectivity lexicons that were originally constructed for measuring subjectivity in the Brazilian Portuguese language. We evaluate our approach on two labeled data sets to show that our method is valid and apply our methodology to analyze recent and largely resounded topics, such as the Venezuela crisis and Syrian war, on four distinct idioms: Portuguese, German, English, and Spanish.}, added-at = {2021-09-28T19:09:38.000+0200}, author = {Sales, Allan and Zehe, Albin and Marinho, Leandro Balby and Veloso, Adriano and Hotho, Andreas and Omeliyanenko, Janna}, biburl = {https://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/266787c3983ae3127e185c04665626f17/jannaom}, interhash = {48e91d03fd9d279c68a8f768aa02c1c8}, intrahash = {66787c3983ae3127e185c04665626f17}, journal = {Proceedings of the International AAAI Conference on Web and Social Media}, keywords = {app_nlp author:hotho author:omeliyanenko author:zehe bias media myown news nlp sentiment}, month = may, number = 1, pages = {561-572}, timestamp = {2023-10-11T09:22:53.000+0200}, title = {Assessing Media Bias in Cross-Linguistic and Cross-National Populations}, url = {https://ojs.aaai.org/index.php/ICWSM/article/view/18084}, volume = 15, year = 2021 } @article{kusche2020strafgesetzgeber, added-at = {2021-03-02T12:59:38.000+0100}, author = {Kusche, Carsten}, biburl = {https://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/2d52c266801ff8033c117b630503a7197/robotrecht}, interhash = {915e87dc4ccc1079f53a8d32cccf76c1}, intrahash = {d52c266801ff8033c117b630503a7197}, journal = {Beck, Susanne/ Kusche, Carsten/ Valerius, Brian: Digitalisierung, Automatisierung, KI und Recht.
