Falling Light

Pinhole photographs record an impression of a moment, a ghost of ‘what was’ in a seemingly permanent way. The falling light, air and movement of a space seems to be caught on the sensitive paper - recording an impression and feeling of a place rather than a photographic record of a space. The element of chance and numerous variables of light, paper and movement, create umbra shadows and soft gradations of tone, helping to communicate the delicate nature of my subject matter. The forms are in soft focus, caught in between states of emerging and vanishing - suggesting the passing of time, the impermanence of life and the nature of the Australian landscape.

The Falling Light series explores the physicality of digital and analogue photographic processes. This series has been informed by the painterly nature of Pictorialism and the way in which artists from this movement were able to evoke emotion and atmosphere through the practical processes of photography - the focus, aperture and darkroom processes were like the brushes, glazes and techniques of a painter.

Falling Light

“One does not photograph something simply for what it is, but for what else it is” - Minor White Contemplating the ephemeral nature of existence, time, memory and presence is an essential part of being human, and is something that I explore in my drawings and photographs. The temperamental nature of pinhole photography is the perfect medium in which to explore the ephemeral. The medium records an impression of a moment, a ghost of ‘what was’ in a seemingly permanent way, not unlike our passing through life – we all emerge and vanish. The element of chance and numerous variables of light, paper and movement help to communicate the ephemeral nature of my subject matter. The umbra shadows and soft gradations of light echo the beauty of the landscape. The forms in the landscape are in soft focus, caught in between states of emerging and vanishing. I am interested in suggesting the passing of time and the impermanence of life and the landscape.
