The Shortest Embarrassing Papers on Special Relativity. 11/12 A series of mini-articles on special relativity. January-February 2023. Antonio Leon. Retired Professor. In a discrete space and time, special relativity is neither consistent nor necessary. If the spacetime continuum is inconsistent (and it can be proved it is [1, 2]), space and time would have to be discrete, with indivisible minimal units. A discreteness with which the special theory of relativity is not compatible [3]. But it is not necessary either: the Principle of Relativity would be replaced by the classical Principle of Actualism: the laws of nature are the same in all times and places (note that, like the rest of the fundamental laws, it does not need to refer to abstract reference frames). Moreover, there would exist a maximum speed of one pace unit per time unit, which makes the Principle of the Constancy of the Speed of Light unnecessary. References: [1] Antonio León.
