The paper describes the use of acoustic emission method, a non-destructive testing tool applied to three-point bending testing of fine-grained composites. While its application to homogenous materials in mechanical engineering is described quite well, its employ and evaluation in civil engineering are very complicated because many building materials are not as homogenous as finegrained composites. Acoustic emission procedures show results similar to other classical techniques. Although rather costly, the acoustic emission method has the advantage of an easy application to the monitored structure. This outcome has been achieved with the financial support of the Czech Science Foundation, project No. 16-18702S (AMIRI), and supported by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic under the “National Sustainability Programme I” (project No. LO1408 AdMaS UP) and project No. FAST-J-17-4554 supported by the Faculty of Civil Engineering of Brno University of Technology.

The studies carried out were aimed at developing guidelines for the procedure of employing the Acoustic Emission (AE) method for ensuring the required manufacturing quality and operating safety of composite bridge structures. For the studies, the experience gathered in the studies of thin-walled components made for the aeronautics, automotive and boatbuilding sectors was used. The focus was components with a significant thickness (14÷16 mm) which are, by their nature, less homogeneous and can have more defects when compared to thin-walled composites. The studies carried out for the purpose of this work demonstrate the system for the acceptance tests of composite structures. The demonstrator model in question was developed based on laboratory tests of composite components and of parts of a prototypical structure under load, as described in this work. The recorded acoustic signals were analyzed using software enabling the authors to analyze numerous parameters of the signals and to lo...

Materials testing is an extremely important process in the modern world with new colossal structures being built in every corner of the earth, with the ever increasing size of structures making safety of vital importance. This project examines the mechanical behaviour of three commonly used structural metals when subjected to a tensile loading; Steel, Aluminium and Brass. The tensile load was applied to the metallic specimens at different loading rates. Acoustic Emission (AE) was the main monitoring tool implemented into the procedure to record in real time the elastic waves produced from the three individual materials, as they were applied with the load until failure. Fractography was also implemented into the analysis to compare the AE signals with microscopic deformation characteristics of the materials. The discussion of AE activity was divided up into individual regions on the loading graphs. Although displaying unique graph shapes, the same regions were still available for all...

Research of mechanical behavior of composite materials under stress is of great practical importance. Damage accumulation characteristics, damage sustainability and maximum safe operational load are subjects considered during design of critical composite structures. Non-destructive techniques are of major importance in the assessment of the damage tolerance of composite structures, while acoustic emission technology has several unique advantages for this goal. The purpose of this work is to identify unique acoustic emission characteristics of different damages that evolve during loading to failure. Specifically, we describe application of acoustic emission method for monitoring of damage initiation and development to failure in carbon fiber wet layup and prepreg composite laminate specimens subjected to load. We present identification of several characteristic stages of damage accumulation in specimens, assessment of maximum safe stress levels and load levels at on-set of structural...
