The heritage of school buildings constructed in the 1970s in Turin is one of the most interesting infrastructures of the public city in terms of extension and capillary diffusion across the urban fabric. The school buildings erected in the expansion areas envisioned by the Popular Affordable Housing Plans, which underwent great demographic changes in the last ten years, can be considered a resource for the present-day city. Through archive documents and the analysis of the relationship between built space and teaching styles, the present article explores this theme by looking at two schools in Turin, both of which were taken, at the time of their construction, as models of the relationship between built space and didactics

Il contributo illustra l'esperienza del CIS Roma Scuole Verdi, in cui il Gruppo di Ricerca DiAP dell'Università 'Sapienza' di Roma ha supportato il Dipartimento CSIMU di Roma Capitale nell'avvio di un percorso di riqualificazione energetico-ambientale e decarbonizzazione di 111 edifici scolastici distribuiti nei 15 Municipi del Comune di Roma. Attraverso un approccio sistemico e multi-scalare sono stati individuati e monitorati alcuni indicatori target di miglioramento prestazionale (KPIs), significativi per classe energetica, abbassamento delle emissioni climalteranti, riduzione dei fabbisogni energetici e approvvigionamento da fonti rinnovabili. L'apporto positivo delle soluzioni tecnologico-impiantistiche implementate presenta un potenziale di replicabilità, contribuendo all'intensificazione delle azioni per il clima, con impatti sulla rigenerazione urbana e sui bilanci pubblici della città. The contribution illustrates the experience of CIS Roma Scuole Verdi, where the DiAP Research Group of the 'Sapienza' University of Rome supported the CSIMU Department of Roma Capitale in launching a process of energy-environmental upgrading and decarbonisation of 111 school buildings distributed across the 15 Municipalities of the City of Rome. Through a systemic and multi-scalar approach, some Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) were identified and monitored, which were significant for energy class, reduction of climatealtering emissions, reduction of energy needs, and supply from renewable sources. The positive contribution of the implemented technological-plant solutions presents a replicability potential, contributing to the intensification of climate actions, with impacts on urban regeneration and the city's public budgets.

The City of Rome is trying to come into line, culturally and strategically, with European standards of environmental health and energy savings. This study is designed as a roadmap for the retrofit of existing building stock, through the analysis of case studies of major significance in terms of building characteristics and period of construction. The recognition of the consistency of the existing school building stock and the subsequent selection of the buildings that are representative of general conditions allowed us to compare results and draw from them intervention guidelines that are applicable to almost all of the school building stock. The guidelines developed by the authors take into account the optimisation of the building envelope and plant system, as well as the pay-back period of each case. The interventions, with their low investment costs, have significant benefits in terms of energy efficiency, with a subsequent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, and in terms of indoor and outdoor environmental quality, and propose a systemic approach to the retrofit of Mediterranean cities, which often have ancient and monumental historic centres that need to be protected and enhanced, as well as in the established suburbs, defined as those that appeared up to the ‘70s-‘80s. For these buildings, characterised by great potential for transformation and often with poor architectural and technological quality, the energy retrofit is also an opportunity to redesign and redefine the levels-objectives of indoor comfort. The reduction of energy consumption in school buildings, estimated at about 40% for the envelope and 20% for the plant, other than the evident environmental benefits to the territory, also has a significant impact on the education of the individual awareness of the users. Widespread retrofit of public structures at the disposal of young students, other than having a powerful impact in the reduction of greenhouse gases, constitutes a fundamental element in education on environmental issues and quality of the built, creating an unquantifiable extra value for sustainable development in the City of Rome and for the construction of more liveable and civilised cities.
