Socio-economic inequalities in health are a major challenge for health policy, not only because most of these inequalities can be considered unfair, but also because reducing the burden of health problems in disadvantaged groups offers a great potential for improving the average health status of the population as a whole. However, it seems that public health professionals are not enough aware of inequalities in health or they are not trained enough to handle them. It can be partially explained by the fact, that there is neither postgraduate education nor training in the field of socioeconomic inequalities for public health personnel. This module consists of four workshops, one workshop for every learning objective (workshop 1 - Assessment process of the availability of data, Workshop 2 - Existing data resources, Workshop 3 - Methodological guidelines, Workshop 4 - Formulating a public health policy.
Albania today is still a low HIV prevalence country, but major concerns exist that since the 1990s there has been an uncontrollable increase in the risk-behaviours coupled with spontaneous massive internal and external migration, and a lack of information about the causes and prevention of HIV/AIDS. By the end of 2004, there were 149 HIV cases in Albania, of which 48 cases of AIDS (with 25 deaths). Sexual transmission, both homosexual and heterosexual, accounts for over 90% of HIV cases in Albania and the age-group most affected is 30-40 years old. The majority of reported HIV cases were acquired outside Albania. According to projections of the National HIV/AIDS Program, in 2010, the number of HIV cases might reach 10,000-15,000 if the necessary prevention measures would not be taken. Thus, after 2000, there was an emerging need for a national strategy of control and prevention of HIV/AIDS in Albania. This was due to the increasing number of new cases every year as a consequence of ...

Home schooling through online teaching in the era of COVID-19: Exploring the role of home-related factors that deepen educational inequalities across European societiesThe COVID-19 pandemic has forced governments worldwide to produce solutions to the abruptly interrupted work in education. School systems appear to have responded rapidly, creating home schooling and online educational environments, where teachers and students would interact with safety. In this paper, we attempt a synthesis of Sen’s capability approach, Bourdieu’s theory of capital and Bernstein’s framework in order to theorize the relationships between home and school conditions and practices, and to analyse the data of the 2nd Survey of Schools: ICT in Education (a survey conducted in 2019 on behalf of the European Commission collecting data regarding digitalization in education and digital technologies in learning in the European Union). The survey is complemented by a second set of indicators provided by Eurostat to further investigate the availability and functionality of household space per family in selected European countries. We find significant differences in important so...

Intercultural Education
INTERCULTURAL COMPETENCIES OF TEACHERS AS A PREDICTOR OF INTERCULTURAL EDUCATIONNowadays, the Republic of Croatia, as a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the European Union (EU) and the United Nations (UN), in accordance with international agreements, sends members of its Armed Forces to crisis areas around the world as part of peace support operations. Our soldiers, non-commissioned officers, and officers participate in the conduct of international military operations in various duties from contingent commanders, staff, and executive officers to soldiers in patrols and checkpoints, so they are expected to possess different competencies in order to carry out the task. Military teachers who conduct training at the Dr. Franjo Tuđman Croatian Defence Academy to the only higher education institution in the Armed Forces of the Republic of Croatia are most responsible for the education of officers and the acquisition of the necessary competencies. The connection between intercultural competence (through skills, attitudes, awareness, and knowledge) of military teachers and teachers' responsibility towards multiculturalism. The survey was conducted among military teachers of the Croatian Military Academy (N = 60) 51 teachers and 9 female teachers. Research within the paper starts from the hypothesis that knowledge as a part of intercultural competence is the most significant predictor of teachers' responsibility towards interculturalism. The paper uses data from the preparation of the doctoral dissertation "Intercultural Curriculum of Military Schools", which was defended on December 18, 2018, at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Zagreb. The analysis of the obtained results clearly showed that the knowledge of interculturalism, of all other predictors, has the greatest impact on the responsibility of military teachers towards interculturalism.

Parents’ Views on Family Resiliency in Sustainable Remote Schooling during the COVID-19 Outbreak in FinlandThe closure of schools because of the COVID-19 pandemic created a challenge for families and teachers in supporting children’s remote schooling. This study investigates parents’ perspectives on their accommodation to the rapid change to remote schooling from the point of view of sustainable education. The study was conducted at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in spring 2020 via an online questionnaire for parents, to which 316 voluntary participants responded. Data were analyzed using a theory-driven content analysis. According to the results, parents were worried about the learning and wellbeing of their children as well as management of daily life and use of information and communications technology (ICT). The results show the importance of schools and teachers as well as networks in supporting family resilience during rapid changes. Families’ individual needs should be acknowledged and met in a sustainable way to support children’s learning in changing settings, including ...
