This report synthesizes the findings of a series of four online consultations which were conducted as part of the study “The Future of Learning: New Ways to Learn New Skills for Future Jobs”. The findings suggest that, while the existing physical and formal structures of education and training will remain intact, schools and universities will change significantly with respect to pedagogical strategies. Learning and teaching processes will be more flexible in addressing and implementing individual needs and preferences.
EU policies call for the strengthening of Europe’s innovative capacity and it is considered that the modernisation of Education and Training systems and technologies for learning will be a key enabler of educational innovation and change. This report brings evidence to the debate about the technologies that are expected to play a decisive role in shaping future learning strategies in the short to medium term (5-10 years from now) in three main learning domains: formal education and training; work-place and work-related learning; re-skilling and up-skilling strategies in a lifelong-learning continuum. This is the final report of the study ‘Mapping and analysing prospective technologies for learning (MATEL)' carried out by the MENON Network EEIG on behalf of the European Commission, Joint Research Centre, Institute for Prospective Technological Studies. To determine how education and training policy can adequately prepare learners for life in tomorrow's society, we must envisage what competences will be relevant and how they may be acquired from 2020-2030. This report presents the findings of a structured and targeted expert consultation exercise, which aimed to identify, cluster and rate the main changes in education and training expected to occur over the next 20 years.

The Europe 2020 strategy acknowledges that a fundamental transformation of education and training is needed to address the new skills and competences required if Europe is to remain competitive, overcome the current economic crisis and grasp new opportunities. However, to determine how education and training policy can adequately prepare learners for life in the future society, there is a need to envisage what competences will be relevant and how these will be acquired in 2020-2030.
