After the war of independence (1898), the Cuban sugar industry, in addition to recover from the conflict, continued the adjustment process of a strong technological change experimented since the late Nineteenth-Century. The reason for this change was the international competition, but the way it was responded to specific factor endowments: the relative supply of inputs, the abolition of slavery, the accelerator effect it had in the industry the independence war and a trade agreement with the United States –country that occupied the island in 1898– explaining that the sugar factories incorporated unusual high manufactures capabilities in the world to support the growth of its offer that allowed the U. S. market to maximize their efficiency. As modern sugar mill is a continuous process technology, in which any change carries organizational problems, these conditions gave an even greater importance to adjustment, since the efficiency of the innovations depended on their link-up. The theme had only been studies for its final results, which were successful, but its details and process were unknown and and that is what this article proposes to analyze.
