‘Futuring Craft’ An Overview Dr Qassim Saad (Ed's) Curatorial Advisor & Conference Convenor The conference aims to map contemporary crafts in the Indian Ocean region and to define the future scope of craft making. Current indicative research and creative practices will contribute towards the futuring of crafts across the region. The conference enhances the efforts of academics, craft-makers and curators to collaboratively engage, through critical analysis, and to challenge predominant conceptions linking crafts with the past, to move further towards addressing the notion that, “Craft needs to be seen as a quality of things of the future, rather than a thing of the past! It needs to arrive as elemental to a future economy and culture” (Fry, 2011, P. 139) In this context, we argue ‘futuring’ as a scope of employing individual characteristics to enhance the future transformation of our societies. As human beings, we rely on non-human things; these are the artefacts that we position as a central element in sustaining our physical and mental life. Futuring craft research aims to theorise creative practices and create experimental knowledge, to support the broadening of research practices into, for, and through craft practice (Frayling, 1993), as “[t]his scope is still relatively underdeveloped compared to mainstream design research” (Niedderer, 2014, P. 625). Building on the significance of crafts as value-driven within the existing economic paradigm, this approach is applied across the region as a reflection on transformation towards modernity, development, and beyond. We must acknowledge craft as an object of empowerment, as an artefact that interacts physically through its quality of making as well as through its sensory influences, as reflected through experience, emotion, and aesthetic pleasure.

Designer, educator and writer Lorraine Wild has had a distinguished career that spans nearly 40 years. While she has maintained a prodigious output of design work and writing, her contributions remain critically unexamined. Beginning with Aldo Rossi’s L’architettura della città (1966) and Robert Venturi’s Complexity and contradiction in architecture (1966), and later, Venturi, Denise Scott Brown and Steven Izenour’s Learning from Las Vegas (1972), this essay touches upon the impact these books had on visual culture on a broader scale. Lorraine Wild’s affinity and support for the mundane and vernacular or “unschooled” forms of graphic design falls in line with what would become postmodern narratives of the 1980s and 1990s, narratives put in motion by Rossi, Venturi, et al. This essay will consider a number of Wild’s designs with respect to how they reflect the conditions of modernity circulating at the time of their respective production.

This study is observing design in Egypt to articulate its theoretical framework, which developed since the establishments of the early model of vocational school in 1839. The school formed to provide much needed skilled workers for the modern industrial productions capabilities progressively established at that time. The school transformed during the postcolonial era to take the current educational institution of applied arts. Building on Egypt's geopolitical superiority and cultural influences in the region, its design education model spread across many neighbouring countries. Egypt is one of the ancient centres of skilled craftsmanship, traditional crafts as socio-cultural context and practices continue to influence the applied arts teaching pedagogy. The study argues the need to consider the role of design in the social context and move it outside its traditional context and practices of making and ornamenting material objects.

Intelligible pronunciation is an essential component of communicative competence as learners who have adequate pronunciation can easily improve their speaking skills better than those who have weak pronunciation. Pronunciation is, therefore, vital to achieving successful communication. A large number of learners believe that the main difficulty they encounter when speaking a second/foreign language is pronunciation and consider this difficulty as the main source for their communication problems. Despite the fact that pronunciation is key to communicative competence, it is neglected in many Arabic teaching programmes. In view of this, the motivation for this presentation is the increasing unpopularity of the pronunciation aspect of teaching Arabic as a foreign language. This has caused a fewer efforts to be taken in improving learners' pronunciation skill despite this being quite a concern among professionals in educational environments that demand intelligible spoken Arabic. Accordingly, this presentation aims to provide both quantitative and qualitative analysis of the issue. It will present the latest data exposing learners’ perception of pronunciation instructions as well as teachers’ view on the un/necessity of teaching pronunciation and the lack of teaching materials that help them in teaching phonetic and phonological aspects of Arabic. This will be followed by discussion on the impact of pronunciation on other language skills, namely writing, reading, listening and speaking. A further focus will be on the phonetic and phonological difficulties encountered by learners such as the production and perception of Arabic sounds, scrutinising various factors and variations contributing to such difficulties and thus proposing the most appropriate methods and approaches that are recommended for Arabic teachers to tackle such challenges. This is concluded by examining how technology can help with teaching pronunciation inside and outside of the classroom and the latest technology tools utilised in language classrooms to meet pronunciation teaching and learning goals.
