Statement of Teaching Philosophy
My teaching philosophy is a combination of inclusion, collaboration, integration, participation, inquiry, and active student involvement often in the flipped class format. I dedicate teaching to puncturing excessively rigid disciplinary siloes and opinions to focus students on critical thinking and analysis of events within system models of common or even uncommon crosswalks between otherwise seemingly disparate disciplines while focusing on the discipline of the courses being taught. It may seem at first that this approach can be confusing to students (and faculty); however, I make the connections clear; and, I have never read a complaint about this approach in any course evaluation. Indeed, students often express appreciation for my ability to place a particular discipline of study into a broad worldview perspective. I want my students to develop an integrated world-view as they gain knowledge. It is very important to me to help students view the world outside of narrow opinion points.
For example, when teaching courses in public health and health administration, I introduce students to government policy and practices since they will be exposed in their careers in public health and health administration to public policy, health policy, political processes, public budget analysis, and policy formulation and implementation as social science processes; and, it is important for them to understand the socio-political environment they will be entering. I also instill in students a strong understanding and appreciation for leadership skills, ethics, and integrity as key ingredients in the success of the firm or public organization, and public confidence as the key to public trust in their organization whether they are in the private sector or public sector.
As part of an emphasis on organizational leader attributes, I emphasize the important aspects of ethics and integrity in organizational leadership especially given some of the highly publicized lapses in ethical judgement they often see in the media. I am equally comfortable teaching students who are younger, first time in college; and, at-risk students who need extra encouragement, support and tutoring. Whenever possible, I invite students to join me in community sponsored projects where they then have the opportunity to earn honors credit while gaining practical experience.
When I have served as a department chair, program director or institute director, I am supportive of both adjunct and full time faculty development enabling them to be successful, and to better support students; as well as their own scholarship. I was part of the team that initiated the first Faculty Development Center at Palm Beach Community College when I was there as District Curriculum Coordinator and adjunct instructor in economics, business, and political science in the Health Studies Institute. I believe that supporting the faculty and staff is an essential requirement to supporting students and the community.
My work characteristic as teacher and administrator is that I am always available providing students and faculty with my cell phone number for after-hours issues that may arise. I invest myself in students and their success as well as faculty as colleagues; and, I consider it important that as an academic administrator or researcher that I also teach courses annually to stay in contact with both the disciplines and the students. I am honest about myself and expectations so that everyone, faculty and students alike, know what to expect; and, they can meet those reasonable expectations even as I set the bar high enough to provide them with “stretch”. I am concerned about their success and any problems they may experience so that I can help. I remain available to students and faculty outside of the classroom and outside of posted office hours. I realize that pressing problems do not always fit into office hours. Related to students, I work diligently to relate course work to the world outside of the classroom so that students can see relevance in the curriculum.
Finally, I take an interest and actively participate in school activities outside of the classroom which means I attend school functions such as open houses and other campus events. I can travel with student groups as mentor or guide whenever student groups attend off campus activities at times I may be available. I am visible at activities that engage students on campus outside of the immediate classroom. I am equally active when teaching online or hybrid courses since students need close faculty support especially in remote course delivery.
Statement of Research Interests and Activity
My current work over the past several years has touched on a number of interdisciplinary boundaries both locally and globally. Today, the emerging datascience of Big Data Predictive Analytics will transform social science, economics particularly behavioral economics, political science, policy science, public administration, public health, health administration, and the practice of medicine on a global scale. It is a game changer in how public policy is formulated and implemented; and, it will create a far more effective process of program review and evaluation of all public programs. I presented a paper at the ASPA national conference in 2017 on how big data predictive analytics will transform public policy formulation, implementation, and program review and evaluation.
However, not all advances in science are necessarily safe without a much stronger role for public administration and public health in regulating dangerous science and in preparing communities for potential intentional or accidental release of a highly virulent pathogen with a high case fatality rate that could cause an incident of mass casualty. I have published on this issue and I have made public presentations at conferences. The danger of bioterror is far worse now due to easily available biosyn technology than the danger of a nuclear detonation.
Another area of study and publications/presentations is on public policy related to special population homelessness and the high cost of providing medical care related to the cost-push economic drivers of advanced technology and an increasingly unhealthy population. I have several papers currently in the international peer review pipeline on these serious public issues.
It is important to note that my research interests extend from local public problems to complex “wicked problems” and leaders managing in the “gray areas” on a national and global scale. My emphasis on Big Data Predictive Analytics revolves around its potential to provide enhanced data analysis opportunities leading to stronger predictive power as public issues are viewed through a more data intensive lens. I have presented on this topic at the City of Orlando City Hall, a regional conference and two national conferences. This deep level of data analysis will be transformative in terms of how public policy is implemented in the future; and, it will impact all research areas of social science and population health.
I am an interdisciplinary scholar in that I explore and find critical crosswalks between public administration, public health, and health administration; and related disciplines addressing social and political problems nationally and globally. My 2013 book Global Public Health Policy is being prepared now for a 2nd edition publication date early in 2017. I also have a book forthcoming in 2017 titled Emerging Global Public Health Issues of the 21st Century. Both books provide strong crosswalks between public administration and public health on a global scale. The 2013 book has sold out and the publisher has ordered a 2nd edition rather than a second printing to continue this book’s successful marketing.
As a sponsored research professor, I have worked in sponsored contract projects in a number of public agency issue studies such as economic cluster analysis and a major school nurse implementation planning process for 186 schools in the district. Also, my forthcoming book is on Emerging Global Crises in Public Administration and Public Health which is a follow up to my previous book; Global Public Health Policy. I am also writing a book on Community Police Leadership based on a course I designed and have presented both online and on site to police command officers in three states.
