This paper examines similarities and differences between Thai and English consonants. It determines areas of difficulty when Thai students try to pronounce English consonantal sounds. It is found that some English sounds that do not occur in Thai phonology tend to pose great difficulty these sounds include /g/, /v/, /θ/, /ð/, /z/, /ʃ/, /ʒ/, /tʃ/, and /dʒ/. Sounds that exist in Thai but can occur in different syllable positions in English also tend to be difficult to pronounce; examples include /f/ and /s/. In attempting to tackle the problem of sounds nonexistent in Thai, Thai students are likely to substitute Thai sounds for English sounds. An additional problem is the interchangeability of /l/ and /ɾ/ in Thai, erroneously transferred to English. To alleviate the problem sounds for Thai learners of English, this paper recommends that teachers follow listening and speaking pedagogy for pronunciation in terms of recognition, discrimination and production.

PHONETIC INTERFERENCE OF NATIVE LANGUAGE IN THE GENERAL AMERICAN ENGLISH UTTERANCES OF FILIPINO LEARNERS2022 •
This study suspected that native language interfered in the General American English speech of Southern Cebuano English language learners. Thus, this studied the native language phonetic interference in the second-language speech in General American English. It centered on how the Southern Cebuano Visayan segmental phonemes interfere with the utterances of the respondents. It used the qualitative analytical method where the respondents were tasked to read several words taken from the book of Harrington published in 2010-Phonetic Analysis of Speech Corpora. Errors in the sound articulation certainly pointed the interference. This investigation exposed that Cebuano Visayan segmental phonemes /a/, /i/, and /u/ interfered with the articulation of General American English Segmental phonemes; the Cebuano Visayan consonant plosives interfered the General American English fricatives; all were interfered only in terms of aspiration for clusters; and the old habit in the L1 of reading a word as how they are spelled. Hence, it was recommended that anyone teaching English language in Southern Cebu may determine the existence of segmentalphoneme interference in the General American English utterances of learners, contrast the Cebuano Visayan and General American English, and plot some activities intended to establish an efficient phonetic articulation in English

To tackle the problem of sounds nonexistent in Thai, Thai students are likely to substitute Thai sounds for the English sounds. In addition, the phenomenon where /l/ and /ɾ/ are used interchangeably in Thai tends to be transferred in pronouncing /l/ and /ɹ/ in English with great challenges.

Language is a way of communication with other people. People can make conversation through a set of words that become a sentence. There is one language that uses as the International language to communicate with other people who come from other countries in this world. Thus, English is used as an intermediate language for communication. One of nations, that use English to communicate, is the Philippines. The research found some phenomena that exist when Filipino speakers speak English. There were two objectives to be analyzed in this study: to find out the English words that the vowel is changing from English vowel into Tagalog vowel and identify the phonological process of Filipino speakers’ pronunciation in the vowel change. The phonological approach is used to solve the problem formulation of the research. The research analyzed a short movie entitled “Everglow” from the Philippines and analyzed the vowel changes in Filipino speakers’ pronunciation. The analysis showed that there ...

The Effects of Pashto /p/ and /w/ Phonemes on English /f/ and /v2021 •
This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 License. INTRODUCTION Pashto has about 50 million speakers (Hallberg, 1992). It is spoken in Pakistan, Afghanistan as well as in Iran. According to Pakistan's census (2017) there are about 38 million native speakers of Pashto in Pakistan which is more than 15% of the overall population of Pakistan. It is practiced at provincial level in KP. The similarities and differences among the phonetics of languages affect the learner's performance of L2 in terms of pronunciation (Odlin, 1989). Speaking a second language involves different skills like pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar and so on. Pronunciation is one of the important skills in English Language (Gilakjani, 2011). As stated by Fraser (2000) educators ought to be equipped with courses that help them to improve their pronunciation. Second language Learners in general and English learners in particular pay less attention to pronunciation. They focus more on grammar believing that pronunciation is less important. Many mistakes of misunderstanding in communication are caused by the mispronouncing of words (Ahmad, 2017). Mispronunciation often leads to misunderstanding and to miscommunication. Morley (1999) expressed that native like articulation is the basic goal of pronunciation. The objective of correct pronunciation learning is not that students articulate like native speakers, yet to articulate intelligible words. Intelligible pronunciation should be the real purpose of oral communication. If learners want to change the way of pronouncing English words they will have to change the way of thinking about the sound of these words (Lado, 1957). Correct pronunciation leads to meaningful communication as well as good representation. Communication and representation are two of the primary purposes of language. Communication is self-explanatory while representation is basically the classification of things in our mind with the help of the language we use (Joseph, 2000). This means that language is the tool used to express one's self (Ochs, 2008) which is exactly true about both first and second language acquisition. Learning/Acquiring a second language sometimes brings new identity (Pavlenko and Lantolf, 2000; Lightbown and Spada, 2006) because second language learners are real people involved in real conversation connected through a network of interaction (Riley, 2006; Ushioda, 2009). There could be numerous reasons for incorrect pronunciation of target language. One among these numerous reasons is no one-to-one correspondence between the sounds of L1 and L2. If the sounds of L1 are same as the sounds of
