Introducción La crisis financiera en Argentina en 2000-2001 ha sido explicada por algunos analistas como el resultado de la incompatibilidad entre el régimen cambiario (la junta monetaria creada en 1991) y la política fiscal (incapaz de reducir el déficit pre-supuestario), por lo que se trataría supuestamente de una crisis financiera de primera generación. No obstante, un análisis comparado con las crisis asiáticas de 1997-1998, denominadas por muchos expertos crisis de segunda o incluso tercera gene-ración, permite concluir que ambas han presenta-do similitudes importantes. Este artículo pasa revista, en primer lugar, a las causas desencade-nantes de la crisis argentina. En segundo lugar, aborda las similitudes y diferencias de esta última con las crisis asiáticas. Finalmente, hace una breve reflexión sobre los factores generales de las crisis financieras de los últimos años en las eco-nomías emergentes, para concluir que se trata en realidad de crisis recurrentes propiciadas por la globalización. 2. Origen y desarrollo de la crisis financiera de Argentina Para hacer frente a la hiperinflación de los años ochenta y primeros noventa (346 por 100 de media anual en 1983-92; 1.344 por 100 en 1990 y 84 por 100 en 1991), el gobierno argentino optó por llevar a cabo, desde abril de 1991, una fuerte estabilización basada en el tipo de cambio, con la ley de convertibilidad de marzo de ese año, que creó una junta monetaria o caja de conversión (currency board), en virtud de la cual se estable-ció la paridad completa dólar-peso y se respalda-ron los pesos en circulación con reservas en dóla-res. Es bien sabido que el uso del tipo de cambio fijo como ancla dura para la desinflación suele tener éxito en la contención del crecimiento de los precios.
